Count Your Christmas Blessings
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Just me on Monday, January 09, 2012 3:00 PM
Unless you’re one of those stalwarts who can keep celebrating right through Candlemas on February 2, our Christmas celebration closes with Epiphany (yesterday) and today’s transferred feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
Each feast celebrates public manifestations of Christ: news of his coming reaching beyond Israel to the gentiles, and the beginning of his public ministry.
I thought it might be nice... READ MORE

Happy New Year to all of our readers – I sincerely hope that your holiday celebrations were filled with peace and joy. These first few days of 2012 find me returning to my desk and computer after a nice long break over the Christmas holiday to savor time with family and friends.

A 2012 Try

Are you a perfectionist?
I am, of the frustrated sort, and it makes the start of a new year difficult. On the one hand, I’m tempted to make exhaustive lists of ways to improve myself this year. On the other hand, I dread the guilt I’d inevitably feel as the resolutions fell, one by one.
In recent years I’ve sidestepped this problem by avoiding particular resolutions in favor of more general ones.... READ MORE
Most Fascinating Catholics of 2011
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Just me on Friday, December 23, 2011 11:31 AM
For the past three years, I’ve pulled together a “most fascinating Catholics” list at the end of the year to attempt to shine the light on the amazing efforts of men and women, ordained, religious and lay, who are inspiring the world around them with incredibly effort and heart. You can take a peek back at my 2010 list here.
The amazing thing about this list has been how increasingly difficult it’s... READ MORE
Would You Wear This Sweater? 2011
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Just me on Monday, December 05, 2011 10:00 AM
Welcome to the 2011 Edition of Would You Wear This Sweater?
At first glance, this one may seem kind of tame in comparison with previous editions.
Before you answer: you should know that each of the snowmen depicted on this sweater is sporting a Christmas sweater of his own.
And those sweaters are “showcasing the beloved Victorian imagery of Thomas Kinkade.”
Click the link to see a close-up.
So now: would you wear this sweater?
As always, you are among friends; we won’t judge you.
Happy Thanksgiving To You & Yours

I am grateful for my faith, my family, this magnificent country of ours and its wonderful people—especially all of you.
Here’s a reprise of my brother’s illustration and poem from Thanksgiving a few years back.
Almost Thanksgiving
by Sam Ryskind
Roasted turkey, turkey stuffing
Gravy flowing in a boat.
Crans and hams and mashed potatoes
Whipped until they nearly float.
Yellow cornbread, black molasses,
Butter for a ton of rolls—
Almond, green bean, carrot, spinach,
Pearl onion casseroles.
Stalks of broc and brussels sprouts,
Corn and lima-bean goulashes,
Steamy brains of cauliflower,
Shapely deformed winter squashes.
Soups of root like rutabaga,
Pars’ and turnip, radish, beet,
Codfish stew and salty chowders,
Crammed with clam and oyster meat.
Piping pies hot from the oven—-
Call all hands to bring them in:
Apple, pumpkin, sweet potato,
Nutmeg spiced and cinnamon.
Coffee—lots of cream and sugar—
Tasty tarts stacked on a tray—
Stuffed? Don’t panic, this was practice.
Thanksgiving’s still an hour away!
Thankful For: Humor

I know he’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but Dave Barry never fails to make me laugh. At holidays, I like to hunt down his relevant columns and reread them.
In case your sense of humor is similar and you need a break from prepping your family/house/food for Thanksgiving, I’ve collected a few links to past Thanksgiving columns of his.
Did you know Colin Powell is the capital of Vermont? Read about it in “By the way, those turkey snakes have giant fangs, too.”
This one includes the phrase “a ticking Meat Bomb of Death”: “Defusing the turkey bomb.”
And last but not least, a whole scene with Pilgrims: Great American turkeys.”
(Oh, and don’t worry about the snakes. He’s totally making that up.)
Games for Moms

I have a game I like to play with myself these days. I call it How Much Would You Pay for a Nap?
“Self,” I ask, “how much would you pay to have someone come take over all your responsibilities for a few hours so you could have a nap?”
If things are running smoothly, I decide I’d part with no more than 50 bones. On a rough day, like when I have a headache and the babies are fussy, I consider giving... READ MORE
If God Rested…

My husband, wonderful man that he is, often says to me, “Why don’t you go take a bath?” Or if it’s the best day of the week (Saturday) he says, “Why don’t you go out by yourself for a couple hours?”
I sometimes tell him no. “I will feel better if I stay here and get more stuff done,” I tell him.
I don’t know why I haven’t learned by now: there is always more “stuff” to get “done.” I rarely stop moving... READ MORE

This post has no redeeming social value, but perhaps you’ll find this as amusing as I do.
Some blog-friends of mine were twittering on about “the dishiest manly man who ever lived.”
Naturally, I was curious, so I clicked the link to find…
