Worcestershire

Worcestershire was one of a number of Counties to provide an asylum in compliance to the County asylums act of 1845. Located close to Worcester, Powick asylum was funded jointly by the County and the City of Worcester. Urbanisation of areas of Worcestershire to the south of Birmingham, as well as the towns of Bromsgrove, Redditch, Droitwich and Kidderminster led to the development of a second asylum, Barnsley Hall, serving the northern areas of the county. Both Powick and Barnsley Hall were transferred to the National Health service in 1948.
