Media Blasters Lays Off Staff

Anime video licensor and distributor to lay off 60% of full-time staff

Following the shock of the exit of Bandai Entertainment. another contraction in the anime industry has been confirmed, though the severity of this one depends on your point of view. Home video licensor and distributor Media Blasters has confirmed that it will lay off 60% of its full-time staff and remain with a staff of five or six, with the twist being that CEO John Sirabella wants to rehire the laid-off staff as freelancers.

While he does concede that most will not take his offer, he has stated that production on currently slated titles will not be affected, with the next titles being released being Squid Girl on March 13th and a Blu-Ray version of Yasuo Umetsu's hard boiled action film Kite on February 28th.

Unfortunately this does not stop people from jumping to conclusions and predicting the worst for the company, when the lay offs are being taken to reduce costs, rather than being representative of any larger issues with the company itself. I do hope that those that do not want to be rehired as freelancers can find other jobs, it's kind of hard out there at the moment.

Well damn.....
Ouch. And I'm guessing freelancers don't get benefits?

On the consumer side of things, I wonder how this is going to affect the quality of their products? I've had some issues with their DVDs before - here's hoping things don't get even worse. The more pessimistic side of me hopes that they don't go completely under. Didn't Tokyopop do something similar, lay off a bunch of people, swear it was a necessary step to keep the company afloat, and then go under not long after that?
Yeah, freelancers typically have to cover their own healthcare costs so that's why I'm thinking the layoff and rehire as freelancers option is being put in play. While full-time benefits are awesome, they're expensive. :/
Yes, and with medical costs going through the roof in the US, getting more expensive all the time.

Also, working with fewer full time staff and relying more heavily on freelancers means lower overhead and a company better able to increase and cut back its workload based on which titles they land.
Ya, the more full time employer you have, the more cost it take out of the company. Part time is okay atleast they can get paid to support their's family, but freelancer in this world. That would be living on the street n work without worry bout bills. I hope something good come out of this tho.
it's a sad day for an otaku... T^T
DON'T GO MEDIA BLASTERS!!!! YOU STILL HAVE TO DO THE BERSERK MOVIE!!! T_T
That REALLY sucks. But at least we know we are getting more Squid Girl
Word, son.
Sigh, hope some of the titles they had get picked up by other's!
Funimation and Sentai Film works still exist.
I would have to wonder if this is due to them and they websites with new releases and subscribe plans. much like they do here at crunchyroll.
To the extent that its a cutback in work, it'd mostly be the decline in the overall DVD market.

Indeed, Media Blasters licenses include Squid Girl, and it was probably the audience information from Crunchyroll that helped them decide whether it would pay as a physical release.
wouldn't call this good news but not as bad as it initial sounds and the ceo sounds like a decent guy offering to hire back as free lancers. Heres hoping things work out
Holy crap that sucks. But at least I get squid girl on my birthday!
The associated image with the news gets an "A+" for awesome.
With the low volume of titles they have to process I'm surprised they didn't do this a long time ago.
Twelve Kingdoms Blu Ray was very cool release.
freelance = casuals omg... O.O
I'm not even sure I own any media blasters titles, maybe1 or 2? Bandai was really more of a loss than if Media Blasters were to go away, which they aren't it seems. It's probably a smart move by the company instead of just holding on until they are forced to shut their doors for good.

Squid girl isn't even on my buy list... I liked it, once, but I don't think I'd want to sit through it again.
