300 Chinese Workers Threaten Mass Suicide at Xbox Manufacturing Plant

Workers responding to broken promises and low pay from management

Making video games is hard work, but making the consoles to play them on is apparently much harder work. 300 workers at Wuhan's FoxConn Technology Park in Hubei province made their way to their factory's roof and threatened management with "mass suicide" over a dispute regarding pay.

According to various (still unverified) reports from Chinese anti-government news sites, employees asked factory management for raises, but were told to either quit and receive compensation money, or to keep their jobs and continue working at their current salaries. In response, many workers left--but FoxConn did not pay the compensation they had promised. Employees were finally talked out of jumping by the Mayor of Wuhan a day after they started their protest.

foxconn

So far, neither Microsoft nor FoxConn have given an official statement, but Microsoft has explained:

"Microsoft takes working conditions in the factories that manufacture its products very seriously, and we are currently investigating this issue. We have a stringent Vendor Code of Conduct that spells out our expectations, and we monitor working conditions closely on an ongoing basis and address issues as they emerge. Microsoft is committed to the fair treatment and safety of workers employed by our vendors, and to ensuring conformance with Microsoft policy."

This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened at FoxConn factories, either--in 2010, there were 14 suicides at FoxConn's Shenzhen factory, involving complaints of low pay and poor working conditions.

There's really no room for anything witty to say here--this is a big problem. With the world economy the way it is, companies all over the world are tightening their belts, sometimes leading to situations like this. What do you think?

Talk about hardcore!!
We all deserve decent wages and working conditions for the level of work that we do, go Chinese workers.
Stick it to microsoft, yah!
I don't blame them for wanting raises and going the extra mile to get them, but at the same time it's hard to root for them when they are standing on the ledge of a building. I don't know. It just seems a little morbid to do that.
you die you lose everything think about
You never know whats after life.Maybe new universe :p
Yeah...suicide for a raise doesn't seem reasonable. Because if you don't get a raise...and you stick to the job at least you have something. If you go look for new work, you can find something new more than likely. But suicide leaves you with nothing and your family with out you.... Money isn't worth that.
It does seem like a really poorly thought out tactic, yeah. Rioting or getting themselves arrested en masse would make the point better than this. Threatening suicide is more like asking a society that doesn't really care to pretend that they care.
Except rioting and getting yourself arrested has much greater odds of you suffering an abbreviated lifespan in current-day China than threatening suicide.

Threatening to commit suicide usually means someone's not actually going to do it, and leaves a more lasting impression for both fellow factory workers and others in the world (well, mostly just fellow factory workers) than being dragged off by State Police and never being heard from again.

This is especially true given that the latter happens more frequently than the former.
Unless all your options are about the same (or worse).
i agree with you there but on the other hand if your at rock bottom and cant feed your family cuz they got you working 17hrs a day in a 3x5 ft closet putting together xboxes in a poorly lit/ventiliated area for $3 a day your gonna go fucking batshit too. dont blame these fools at all.

i used these figures as an example. i truly have no idea of the conditions but think about it. it takes alot of shit shoveled on someone to think killing yourself is the way out. one let alone 300 mofos O_o something isnt right there microshaft.
Its Communist China, You are given your job and there is nothing else for you to do if you leave. It isn't America where you can choose to work for Mcdonnels or start your own business and become a business giant.
not really true... communist china doesn't really exist that way anymore. Most of those workers are from rural areas and gave up their 'socialized' benefits to try to make a better life for them selves by working in the cities. In a way china is a better capitalist society than most of the west, with their 'home grown' slave labor caste of people born in the rurals.
Damn! That's worse than Apple! I never thought anything would be bigger than the Apple incident.
Why not? It's the same company whose abysmal working conditions which Apple swept under the rug with extremely similar statements to what Microsoft has just put out. As if Foxconn would actually change its practices after one of the world's largest corporations shielded it from any repercussions.

Unless at least one of their large corporate customers takes their business elsewhere explicitly over those conditions, Foxconn isn't going to change. The only other entity that could make them change is the Chinese government, and they're not going to do that over something that affects their least-costly resource (humans). It would take something that stops a significant amount of money from flowing to the Chinese government to cause them to step in.
Okay I'm all for sticking it to the billion dollar corporations, but I don't think that suicide is the best answer to this.
"give me a raise or i jump!" OK my opinion is this is stupid, how bad can the work honestly be to where they are forced to suicide other then negotiating with less morbid ultimatum... Chinese workers are intense...you all need to take a shot of sake and chill, if you die that leaves you worse off then your current position...suicide in any religion leads you to bad places.
Maybe they would if they could afford it...
This is the weirdest protest ever. Usually you threaten to do something that hurts the company unless you get you way, not something that hurts yourself unless you get your way.
You don't think three hundred employees committing mass suicide on company property hurts the company? Of course it does, especially when FoxConn's reputation is already pretty bad from the Apple suicides.
It just seems weird to me. Even if they increased their pay, they could all be fired afterwards due to undeniable evidence that they are mentally unstable and a danger to themselves.
You would be too if you worked in those conditions.
I couldn't help but do a double-take when reading this summary of this in my RSS reader and seeing it end (as it always does) with "More after the jump."

Takes on a different content here... anyway, how much of this can happen at one company? FoxConn has some serious issues.
Hahahahahahaha thats funny. hhahaha
300 workers threatened factory management that they would commit mass suicide. More after the jump. lol nice CR. This is really sad that the world can't seem to hold itself together these days.
I read it like that too. xD
Yeah, that "more after the jump" boilerplate seems like it deserves a second thought when the story summary involves threatened suicides.

Kind of like saying "Read on for shocking details that will blow you away" when reporting on the destructive path of a hurricane that's still going (which, f course, has happened).
Y'know what, I was hoping that would stay under the radar since I kept such a nice, professional tone throughout the rest of the article. Curse you guys and your excellent attention to detail.
Well I guess that would be 300 less people they would have to worry about paying.
not really, since if theres an "accidental" death in the factory, the company would have to pay the family of the deceased life insurance. which is why at some of the factories u see nets and guards near the windows
pffttt are you kidding me. This is china bro no america, i hardly think they have to pay shit for our cheap goods here...i feel bad
Not to sound cold, but judging on how my friend would react: I'm sure they could get those positions filled within minutes of clean up. If you want to see how most of the population would react youtube "girl hit by van china". China is a very different and interesting country, and I appreciate a Shanghai born friend's discussions with me on cultural ups and downs over there.
That video was horrible but it's not exactly limited to China. Remember that video from the US that went viral awhile back where a man was stabbed and not a single person cared to help him for hours.
hrmmm....ya know...it horrid of me to think this, but what if, and just what if, they really did jump? cause honest to god, i dont think they are quite serious about this mass suicide thing
well its obvious there is some kind of abuse there, from microsoft it seems, they should get a decent wage..
I approve of their methods, I just wish a threat of that level didn't have to be used in today's society.

It's a shame when you have to go this far in order to get by a billion dollar corporation just to make a statement. I'm sure if Microsoft had the ability to keep this under wraps and let them all die, they would and just replace them the very next day as if nothing had happened.
This movement is rather impressive for a Chinese workplace usually what might happen is little more than a small group would band together and simply be snuffed out by themselves, the company, or even the government. Rioting doesn't really work in china and so this is what we are left to do.
I praise them for their conviction but as I have said, I wish it didn't come down to this.
not like the factory would care... china has tons of people who can replace them
I'm glad I don't own an XBOX or support Microsoft in any way (that I know of).
have a computer that isnt a mac? then you have supported microsoft
I do have a Mac. I know Apple isn't saintly either. But ever since the story from several years ago about Microsoft using prison labor to package boxes of its Windows OS I kind of lost all respect for them. Of course, I was using a Mac then too. Don't get me wrong, I like my Mac but I'm no Steve Jobs worshiper.
How does owning a Mac make you better? The same thing came up for them, with this very same company, that they still use.
Oh, it doesn't make me any better. They both get stuff from China. I guess that's the real story: Corruption and lack of any decent labor laws in China. The US was like that too 100 years ago.
Maybe they should have tried a strike first.
You can't think of this as a first world problem. Asking for a raise here means asking for more so you can buy more toys and video games. Over there, they're asking for a raise so they can put a roof over their heads and food in their bellies. We take so many things for granted, like safe working conditions, reasonable work hours, a real minimum wage, unions, and so on. Many of you don't understand that they can't form unions. There is no organization to which to report their unsafe working conditions except to the press. There is no leverage they have against these corporations except their own lives. It's so bad that this is the only way out for them.

Give me liberty, or give me death. That's one idea I don't mind the Chinese taking.
hope they get their rightful payment so they dont need to waste any of their life down to the drain
You also can't underestimate the corruption of chinese officials and managers, money that might be intended for workers or to improve conditions more likely ends up in someone's pockets. It's a culture of tolerating the organized criminals called Communist Party Members. If you ever visit china, it's very pleasant in places and a lot of the people are nice, but you can see the disasterous effects its governemnt has on the common man/woman. Or maybe I'm off completely.
disastrous^
Do or die huh? Sounds like an Asian thing to do. That's why they're great at so many things. But, this determination of theirs... It's the real deal. Though, if I was the last guy to jump, and looked down at the pile of dead bodies I would probably do some thinking, wonder why I had agreed to mass suicide in the first place, and then well... go apply somewhere else.
Also... good thing I'm a Nintendo gamer, XD!!!
Apple had the foresight to put up nets...
I just checked their financials reporting for last year. They posted a 218 million dollar LOSS for the year. Prior years were all profitable so they likely may need to hire some extra street cleaners. They see a couple good years getting posted and want in on the action but I bet they don't want to take the huge paycuts their reasoning would then dictate they should then take in the down years.

Bring the manufacturing jobs back to the US and screw the china. Period.
>complaints of low pay

Lolwut? Foxconn pay more than any any other factory.
Now Chinese workers realise that they are being ripped off by private sectors of the industry.
They should've realised it a long time ago.
its a sad world we live in when people feel the need to say "give me a raise or watch me die"
Microsoft is committed to the fair treatment and safety of workers employed by our vendors, and to ensuring conformance with Microsoft policy."

Yeah....right. If you were 'fair' you wouldn't have closed up manufacturing in the United States so you could get cheap labor.
Do you feel like paying 50 grand for your computer? Nope, don't think so.
..I paid 500 plus screen for mine. And it runs skyrim on max. If someone can build it themselves then sell it to me at cost...I'm sure microsoft can make a profit
suicide on the master's doorstep is the last viable protest of the slave.
What a ridiculous comparison to make. When these people are forced to work or face beatings and/or death, then call them slaves.
getting payed like shit with horrible living conditions etc and no other jobs out there.. it's close enough. Do i really need to post that George Carlin video again about obedient workers? They don't give a shit about etc, they want you to come into work, do your damn job and go the hell home, that's it. To them you are nothing more than disposable piece of garbage but hey they just my point of view... working retail and factory jobs first hand lead to my opinion.
And you say they are not? We're talking about a government that poisons it's people out of policy. and Culture that seems to care for nothing beyond immediate family. Maybe there are no collars chains and whip wielding overseers. But I posit that if you walked 24 hours in their shoes you'd be a tad more empathic.
I'm empathetic but to call them slaves is ridiculous. When people are kidnapped from their homes and forced to work, when a mother has her child taken from her and sold for money, when people are beaten and hung from trees for not coming to work, when a woman can be raped with no legal ground for justice... when that's their situation, call it slavery then. When it's just "our pay sucks" comparing it to slavery is ridiculous.
Well, the rape thing is true there. And the government can allow companies to take your child in exchange for debts there..
So...half way to true slavery already!
I tend to lurk around forums, never actually posting my input. But I feel that more attention should be brought to Foxconn's business practices. Check out this video if you think Microsoft is the only company to blame: The Truth of the Apple iPad Behind Foxconn's Lies : http://youtu.be/V3YFGixp9Jw
its just one of the many tactical thing to do to get a raise..so yea..
Let em JUMP I say!
You're an asshole.
maybe 3 will jump the rest will probably just be shocked that some jumped
the economic situation the US and china has is delicate and complex, and the life people live in china is both even more simple and complex. nobody (most and that includes me) on this forum could possibly understand what it is like to live in a single party state, let alone not having milk to go with your cookies.

the fact of the matter is that these people work for wages that wont buy jack squat, and mix that with high inflation the Chinese are suffering from depleting the US manufacturing base (intentional or not, its happening) through currency fixing.

this situation will continue to happen while there are idiots like china and NK and any other similar states where the free market does not exist (although some restrictions are required). hell, even in the US, there are poor in a similar, but not as sever situation, where the top CEOs make several thousand times their wage.

the solution is neither communism or capitalism, its a very complicated mixture where some aspects are more free than any other type, yet far more restrictive than even NK or some other countries (things like pay disparity, the ratio should be no more than around 300:1, not 2000:1, that's insane).
That's a bit over the top.
Microsoft is full of it, there was a issue with Apple using foxxcon too with the workers. How could Microsoft not know?
This happens often at Foxconn. Nothing interesting here.
this is why i buy american made, or canadian made when ever i can. The only time i get things made in third world countries is when i really need the item and have no other options. It makes me sad to hear that the workers had it so bad that they felt that they had no other choice but to commit suicide.
If I was making 360s for a living, I'd prob do the same thing.
At least now we know why the system sucks so much.
I have a PS3 but I don't think that a console sucks because of something like this.
I was referring to how crappy the hardware is put together for a 360.
A PS3 can survive a sandstorm in kuwait (been proven) 360 died pretty fast in the same test.
Option 1: $1000, Option 2: Quit $0, Option Suicide: $-5000 (for burial costs your family will have to pay.) If their amount of pay is horrible, I feel for them, but suicide threats and quitting over it is just not intelligent.
Lol, its much, much less than 1k a month. Try the equivalent of 100 usd a month at BEST. China has no minimum wage. They can pay you with a bowl of rice a day and get away with it. Also, people tend to not bother with burials there. A candle on a origami boat tends to be the norm.
So..Option 1: barely enough to eat 1 meal a day on. Forced to stay in debt (usually to the people you work for!) by living in their "worker dorm areas"
Option 2: Quit...never get hired again most likely. In China, there is always someone willing to do it for less.
Option 3: Threaten to commit suicide, cause bad PR for the company, they lose money, you still get fired with no benefits. Die a slow, painful Chinese death of starvation. Try to steal food, get caught and executed.
might as well start moving the companies back to the U.S. and offer 7.50 then having to give them a raise. itll be better for our economy. But i def dont want them to commit suicide over a raise. i pray to god they dont :(
if i were the owner i would have said go ahead and jump oh and btw next to me is your replacement and he will work for half as much

with that being said, this is what you get for exporting good american jobs over seas
and its because companies can do just what you said is why they are overseas and how the pays get so low ..... congrats you are officially part of the problem with that attitude
Employers: This is blasphemy..... THIS IS MADNESS!!!
300 Employees: NO! THIS! IS! CHINAAAAAAAAAA!! *jumps off the rooftop*
*while fallings* TONIGHT! WE! DINE! IN! HELL!!!!!!!
*falling* dammit I can't correct it anymore....
It is extreme and also very sad , imagine feeling your life is so worthless, thinking that you have let down your families because you cant pay bills/food/rent even though you work ridiculous hours ,then the stress and depression sets in perhaps they feel they dont deserve to live - and with Chinas population jobs would be hard to get ..... I feel for them.
MEGA companies like Microsoft should Guarantee a base rate of pay for ALL employees and contractors.
If a factory can't pay low enough wages to remain profitable, it shuts down and everybody who depended on it for their livelihood goes hungry. While the situation's certainly exacerbated by the Chinese state constantly debasing the money the workers are paid in, the simple fact of the matter is that the profitable wage rate for your average Chinese worker isn't very high(certainly nowhere near an American's; don't forget that there's shipping costs to consider on top of the productivity gap). Working conditions may be horrendous, but the same was true of western countries when the Industrial Revolution was still in its youth - and, just like in the west, conditions will improve as the Chinese become wealthier.
They wouldn't do it :\
After the first lot jump, me things the rest would lose their appetite, and get back to work.
thats one way to get your statement out
This is communist China we talking about, If they try to go through with their suicide, they will probably shoot them on the way down to make a point.
sigh why do you think the corps moved there in the first place. low wages and cheap labor even at the cost of the people who live there. It's much of what they are trying to do hear now.
To be or not to be, that is the question! Whether tis nobler to suck it up and deal with your current crappy, low-salary, awful job, or fight against it by ending your seemingly worthless life by jumping off a freaking building! To die is to sleep, to jump is to bungee jump without a bungee cord- *shot repeatedly*
I honestly think the whole "Our job sucks so we're gonna deal with it by killing ourselves!" thing is quite rash. I agree with taking action, but this is a little too far...
They work really hard, and we have to appreaciate that :)
