FEATURE: Japanese Junior High Student's Otaku Room Video Report

Surrounding by the anime posters, sleeping with the anime character pillow

A Japanese person named "Shinkaisoku" has posted a 9 minutes video on YouTube to introduce his "Itabeya (痛部屋)" room filled with a huge amount of otaku goods. He claims that he is a third-year student in a junior high school (probably 14-15 year old). He had no interest in anime, manga, figure, and anything otaku-related until seven months ago, but has spent more than 250,000 yen (approximately US$3,252) for the hobby since then. There is no explanation how he, just a 14-15 year old kid, was able to earn such a large amount of money. Do you want to live in a room like his? Is this your dream otaku room?

........dammit that much in 7months kinda of jelly but i have a feeling he is doing something rather UN-ethical to get all of those goods.
I have said it earlier people with a kid this young.. well it's possible he is doing "that" to get the money. I am sure you all know what "that" is.
What are you talking about?? I don't know what "that" is.. TELL ME!
no. You're too young to no such things.
$43,252?? Even if he had a job that's like $6,000 a month. There's defiantly something UN-ethical going on...

I'm also surprised he managed to watch/read all that anime & manga.
meaning "that" i mean... he did favors for people in exchange for money. Unless his parents are fukkin rich this is the only other way to explain it.
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Those must have been some REALLY good favors.
i bet he is a pimp
yeah he must be !!!
enjou kousai. lol.
Well... seeing as how he(sounds like one) has his nails done.... I would say it is "that".
well the anime/manga part is also true.. i concider myself highly active in the anime world watching many at a time and watching older stuff to fill the gaps, and in 7 months with my fulltime job (same kinda hours as school) i cant get close to that number of manga/anime he has and read.

i think his parents are rich, his damn bedroom has a ductless split A/C unit unless he bought that as well (doubtful since teens usually buy trivial things not fixtures and comfort for home)
A ductless mini split AC unit and the similar multisplit ductless are quite popular and typical in Japan. You even see them in anime scenes. Even in the US, they aren't that expensive.

I don't think we would necessarily conclude a kid in the US that has a bedroom with heat and air conditioning has wealthy parents.
I only see $3,252 in the article as I post this comment, and that does match up to the 250,000 yen amount also mentioned. That's only a bit over $464 per month, which is certainly possible with a part time job.
ummm its 3,252 around 600 a month or hes just been saving and never used money but it is still alot of money buy not for someone that lives in japan they get paid alot more than an american worker probably got the money from a dying relative or parents are rich.
misread.. thought it was another number.. maybe it was edited? $43252 was what i read as did some below:s hit the 4 too quick before the shift went down i guess. so your numbers do make sense after the edit lol
And there's somewhat of a worker shortage in some areas in Japan too.

You can easily earn that in the US by the time you are 15. Working age is usually 14 years old, paper routes (allowable at 12 years and older in most places), cutting lawns, lifeguarding over the summer, that's easily attainable. I don't see how this is unusual, or how it really matters how he got it given the sum is not some unrealistic number. Not sure why people assume rich parents.

You could work one full shift on one weekend day for a year stocking shelves and meet that after taxes..
read my post... there was an edit done to the main number.
wait it was only $3,252 USD not $43,252
Unethical? You mean like stealing his parents credit card?
.... That's stupid. I mean, we have no idea how much he drew from his savings. The cultural practice in my country is to give cash to mark religious occasions, birthdays and stuff like that. Parents often deposit these cash gifts (or part of it at least) in savings. I have had 12 year old cousins and stuff who had a good deal of money in their savings accounts because their parents hadn't let them spend all the cash their got on special occasions.

I believe in Japan kids get cash from relatives for New Years and the cash amount depends on the earning level of said relatives. For all we know, he had a significant amount of cash stowed away from saving part of his New Year cash gifts over the year.
thats awesome xD but is it really around 250,000 yen for everything?? seems much more ecpensive
nevermind i misread i thought it said approximately 43 bucks xD holy shit whered he get the money xD
where the hell did he get that money? im mad jelly right now
he must have some internet business
I like his taste in anime, but everyone knows A's > Strikers
Perhaps he prefers his Nanoha and Fate more developed. :)
Whoa,Talk about delication! :o
I'm finding it so hard to believe he got all that in only 7 months... I probably have more manga than him but not as many figures. I guess the figures are where the money went b/c I've been into manga for 7-8 years and haven't spent that much!
Just curious about where he got all that money @.@
me too... 250,000 yen... did he use his inheritance money or something
There's nothing wrong with doing anything unethical to support an otaku's addiction. No, nothing wrong at all.
Eh, Sums up Konata's room in a nutshell lol!
This kid's parents must be freaking loaded and guilty about never being home
even though it's anime, it's a lot of fap material for hentai lovers.
how on earth did this kid get this sort of money, I would like something like it, but definitely with other anime, and not while I'm still living with my parents
Don't kids elsewhere, you know, work? Around here, kids work fast food joints, snack bars, car wash attendees, movie theater, paper routes, etc. Is it really that unbelievable? Plenty of kids put themselves through college with money they earned entirely themselves.

I'm actually in most disbelief that people have had to jump to rather negative conclusions about how he's attained such a rather unimpressive sum. I'm more impressed with what he bought with it.
drugs would have been cheaper.
Other than wondering how he got the money;
my wonder is HOW FRIGGIN' NEAT HIS ROOM IS !!

Are all otakus neat? .__.
yeah i noticed that ...everything is in order , he must be obssessive compulsive
lol same here its like magical money appears!! but heck no im not neat at all....you cant walk through my room right now without tripping on a manga....
He made his money by making an old Japanese business man very happy.
i wouldnt be surprised.. ha ha ha
Ummm, I don´t think that 4 is supposed to be there. Instead of US$43.252, shouldn´t it be only US$3252?
My Hero...
Probably 35 years old living in his parent's basement
No way. ~ Maybe onehundred posters, some figures, and a few volumes of manga. I would believe 25,000 Yen, but certainly not 250,000 Yen.

Perhaps he feels its "worth" 250,000.
Pssh, should have done the conversion myself, its not $43K USD. Makes sense then, a few thousand for all that.
Approximately $3,252 US, not $43,252.
O:!!! How did he get that money? s:
whats up with that thumbnail
Geesh its a BOY'S otaku room XD
Wish it was a girl's just to see if there is any difference!
All I saw was...cleavage..everywhere OTL;;
Interestingly enough, girl Otaku generally have the same room, with the minor exception of BL enthusiasts.
It is sad when you spend that much money on something that you might abandon the next day. He is too into it .
If he is only 14~ that is but still sad he is that into it .
He won't abandon that..hes that much into it lol, but holy that is a lot of things o.o and yea its crazy how he got all that xD
You never know he is a teenager supposedly. They change what they are into constantly.
cocaine addiction is cheaper than Anime addiction O_o
I got much more stuff than him lol, but it's not like I wanna fill my whole bedroom with all that anime/manga stuff but it took me about 4 years to collect all my stuff. It's only suprising he managed to get so much stuff as such a young age. So weird...unless he got a really rich family or unless he did "THAT" thing.
lol thats creepy
Current conversion as of today (Jan 9 2011), post market closure (6pm PST) basically comes up at $3252.25. Still, in seven months, that is some $464.61 a month. Geebus.
That's way more than I'd ever want.
And then he'll burn it all down when he finds out his waifu or her VA even looks at a boy.
O wow, that's pretty cool but kinda creepy same time L. Not sure what else to say on this or how he got the money to afford that.
If he was a real otaku his computer will have an anime wallpaper.
I was thinking the same thing. = )
Haha he's just like the guy from "welcome to the NHK" the main characters best friend/next door neighbor.
ikr that's what i thought when i see the picture.
I do envy his room. While I'd not decorate my room like that, I do consider it more aesthetically pleasant than most rooms I am familiar with. Though I find it hard to believe accumulating all that in only half a year. I don't see how Japan can have an economy for parents to send their children such extreme money. Mind, I'm sure he's no measure of any average circumstances.
Nice mess up on the conversion... Only reason I clicked on this stupid link. o.O
It's amusing how many people actually believe without a doubt that his "claim" is indeed fact.

Providing there is any truth to it my vote would be on mom and dads credit carts are currently MIA.
cards* rather..
Makes me wanna deal.
one word : Parents.
spoiled little brat
Nanoha Striker S's 3 figures all add up to for 83,000 yen. holy. i'd rather buy Saber and her bike.
when talking aout his mp3 players. he has longer nails then I do.
Seriously fix the post. That conversion is horribly wrong. As others have already mentioned.

I imagine your finger slipped and you hit the 4 by mistake, but whatever the case fix it soon please lol. Before we have 1000 comments about how much you typed he spent.
The writer made big mistake on calculation.

250,000 Yen does not equals t0 $43,252.

At current exchange rate rate, it's about $3,500.
thanks, it's fixed now.
IDK how he spent $3252 in seven months, I've been collecting for three years and I've spent just over $4000, at this rate he'll have spent over $16,000 by the time he get to where I am. Some on needs to puck the cork on his wallet. Wait that's already happened...
oopsie!
*pull the cork
a very nice room indeed but I can't see how this is possible without as others have said doing unethical things or having very generous parents
ummm, I hate to say this but you need a girlfriend, dude... I highly recommend LovePlus XD
すごい! that's amazing
Enjou Kousai.
Definitely.
i feel bad for two reasons
1. i underrstood some of what he was saying
2. this is just completely sad in my opinion
also the figures and the electronics are probably where most of the money went
I'm so jelly(well kinda)
Thats a nice room, but i bet you can't find the door when you're in there O.O;
i would never want a room like this. i don't know how he got 250,000 yen. maybe because he is a rich kid. I heard Japanese otaku are very rich.
parents are probably loaded and I don't get why anyone would want that much in there room...
Everyone !!! 250,000 Y is only $ 3, 253 dollars and 98 cents
thats 80 % of my paycheck. I have a lot of manga and dvd too .
if $3,253 isnt even your whole paycheck I want your job.
well now i now how much money i need to save for my dream room
HOLY CRAP! His nails are freaking long!
I'm going to on limb here and say this kid doesn't have many "friends".
Quality over quantity.
I quoted it wrong, it was suppose to be "many" instead. I was implying this guy probably doesn't have any friends at all, or at least any "good" ones.
damn that some awesome room :3 ... i dont even have posters ... just figures to the max :3... damn would love a room like that.. but never sleep on it ;3
He has a long fingernail. o.O
Dude has a part time job $3,000.00 is doable. At least his room is tidy to each their own :)
Well, it would be really hard for his mom to find his porn stash in his room.....
i thought about doing that with my room. though i prefer nendoroids over figmas.
I dont think any unethical thing is going on, because its easy peasy to earn money via internet!
this is all for show...no way look at those mangas they're not bent or anything even if you read them you'll still have the crease in the middle...i heard somewhere too that average japanese kids allowance is like 500$ A week <.< or maybe a month but its some crazy amount. You could work when you're in middle school too so yea maybe a fair amount of both if thats how he got the money... (ah when i was kid i had a 25$ a week but that was for bus money and food for school of course i didnt have to eat and i would save my money lol)
japanese manga covers are too silky they can't be bent that easily =\
I don't think he has enough posters on those closet doors, he should get some more :P
I am totally jelly, but too many posters. I would spend the cash on getting the biggest TV I can, a few shelves like his to store manga and anime, and then buy as much limited edition anime and figures as possible.
Posters are cool and all, but I would not my entire bedroom completely mirrored with them. My favourite was the Kurisu Makise poster, though and the pillows get me jelly.
I could easily make my room like this.
Dammit I wish I lived in Japan. I'm pretty sure I've spent more than that and my room doesn't look nearly that covered. (5 wallscrolls, 13 cosplays, 208 manga volumes, 12 DVD box sets, and 26 figures. btw...) Everythings so much cheaper when you don't have to ship it over...
Also helps he's likely earning in the same currency/rate as the products he's buying. He has more buying power than a, say, US importer, plus as you mention, he doesn't have to pay for shipping (which compounds due to the weak US dollar).

Just imagine what you can buy in the used market in Japan given their population density, high GDP, popularity of anime/manga, and corresponding specialized markets.
Could just be that his parents support his hobby.
If I was a parent I would prefer that my young teen wanted to collect manga/anime figures and watch anime (with me :D) over going out to drink and smoke.
Woah! He's so organized!!! I wish I had as much things as he did T_T
(_ _X) My head hurts...
He actually has interesting anime tastes tbh..Toaru Majutsu no Index, Magical Girl Nanoha, etc. Didn't watch whole video but at least it's not full room of harems L
So young!! I would not like to have that room cause there's things that I don't like, as long as he's happy about it. What if that house is burned??
For him to come up with that sort of money thou..he probably ran a small business, won a lottery, or in the worst case parents gave him enough allowance. Hard to believe it took 7 months to come up with that thou o.O
I noticed there were a couple of part time job comments, but I don't think 13-14 year old Japanese kids are allowed to have a part time job at that age. o__o;;;
I noticed comments from people making things up. 14-15 is around the age when people can start a part time job in Japan. It's not that hard to save up that much in that amount of time with one.
He's 14-15 years old (yo) allegedly. In the US, you're allowed to work at 14 in most states and earlier with some jobs (12yo for paper routes). In the anime Wagnaria, couple of the workers are 16yo, with the main character's youngest sister at 12yo showing up to help out at times.
Can anyone tell me what some of the major anime/manga represented here? I know K-On and Angel Beat, but not too much else. They looked very awesome and I want to look into them. ^,^
The majority of his stuff is from K-On and the Nanoha franchise (Nanoha, Nanoha A's, Nanoha Strikers, and Nanoha the Movie 1st); he's got a small pile of Haruhi and Evangelion figures, and a good number of One Piece merchandise. His... err... linens are of Super Sonico, the mascot for a *coughH-Gamecough* company. He's also got a couple of prominent things for Sora no Otoshimono (Heaven's Lost Property) on his ceiling. Those were the things that caught my eye enough for me to remember. :)
I'm having more trouble seeing what he spent all that money on -- even at only US$3200, there's not enough there that really makes up that much unless you also count that pile of tennis rackets and all his electronics too. A lot of those smaller posters, vinyl folders, and I think even the K-On sticker on his PSP are omake that you can get in magazines like Megami and NyanType (He has a small stack of them that he pans by at one point...). Manga and the other posters don't really add up to that much, and he doesn't really have that many models/figures. Even the pillow cases and covers don't add up to that much.

There is one thing that was lacking from his room that would have explained where all that money went, and that would be actual anime DVD/BDs. THOSE are expensive! XD
I wonder what his parents think of all this?
Ah ha! So this is how great those new HP printers work! Oh wait, this isn't a CES 2012 Demonstration today... Woops...
7 months...How wou- I don't even...
Wow, that is a lot of stuff!

I think my room is close to being there.
this guy need to get a life so much money wasted on all that crap
Agreed, its fine for now since he's 14. However if he's still collects materials of female teenagers depicted in sexual manners at the age say 30ish, the dude seriously has some social/*cough*pedo*cough problems.
for a 14 year old I'm not so surprised by all the ecchi and figurines and manga. nor the 3200+ dollars. I raised 4 boys and they each had their collections in overflow. but never have they had a CLEAN room.
I know it was mentioned by others about the neatness/OCD nature of the room, but this still made me laugh.
my room would totally look like his but with a bunch of 2D guys! YES /dreams of it
This is amazing. I definitely want a room like that. If you have the money, why not?
Otaku mentality scares me sometimes, the kid (if he really is the age he claims to be) has collected more anime goods in those 7 months than I ever had in the 8 years I've been an anime fan.
mmm i like his room what was the song? i like jap music but cant find any good artists any suggestions?
lol i'm trying to find out the song name too DX
CAN SOMEONE TELL US THE NAME OF THE SONG?????!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm sure someone knows D:
Don't be so jealous of the kid-tuku! BANZAI OTUKU"! BANZAI!
i see lots of loli stuff.... an thats just too much..
holy crap, theres lots of loli, and he needs to cut his damn nails
lol WOW!! The room is completely taken over by anime!! XP
If i liked to collect figures which I don't I would be envious lol cool room tho.
Wow even I'm not that crazy and I AM pretty obsessed. i don't have mangas or that many posters but I do collect figures
WOOOOOOOOOOOW
he's not the only one so do i
I really wish this wasn't the case but I feel this kid gets the crap beat out of him at school.
... I want one of i=his PSPs, cameras, figures..... Want, so much want.... but He may have been unethical or been like my bud Mike. Guy saved money like non other then discovered he REALLY liked working on cars. In a year He bought 7 and upgraded them all. It's amazing what some people have in there savings and how much extra time one has when they do nothing but work, school, eat, and sleep
Correct me if I'm wrong, but 痛部屋 means "pain room". Huh?
It's painfully embarrassing or expensive whichever you prefer.
The only thing that disgusted me in this video is the dude's long thumb nail. D:
this is just like my room! <3
why are people making such a big deal out of this he is japanese if you
live in japan there is a high demand on anime figures manga etc
so all of that was cheaper and probably all of the electronics were gifts
anyways whats up with that thumbnail and does anyone know the name
of the song?
WTF. I don't know whether to be jealous or scared...
eh.. dunno why everyone is knocking on this guy, his room is bad ass. if he wanted to spend the money why not?? I know at that age I was easily making over $500 a month with chores and part time job.. 7 months is a wide gap.. with akibahara right around the corner? hmm I think I would have always been broke, but happy :D
Well, I remember as a kid, mowing lawns for $20 a lawn, usually at least 6 lawns a week in my neighborhood. That, and other random jobs like gutter cleaning, snow shoveling, and whatnot. If a kid strives to make money, there are plenty of legit jobs that a kid can do if there are willing to do it.
-jealous- i wish my room was like that!
That really wasn't that impressive.
anyone know where you can purchase that Fate Testarossa figure online?
"There is no explanation how he, just a 14-15 year old kid, was able to earn such a large amount of money" Easy. His parents spoil the hell out of him.
well not sure if he did spend that kind of money. but that long thumbnail is bothering me more.
OMG!!!! It amazes me how people can sit here and bash that this kid is spoiled, that he must have gotten from his parents, or ridiculous accusations. When I was 14, I had a part time job working like 20 hrs a week, and I made at least $500-$700 depending if I worked weekends or during school breaks. It is very possible for him to earn 250,000 yen aka $3,252 in 7 months, especially given if he had money saved. So stop being so damn jealous of what he was able to do, just cause some of you are not able... SMH...
This is so true. So long as you aren't hurting anyone, you can spend your money however you darn well please. I have to admit though that I find it amusing people are treating this like it's a large sum of money.
A lot of countries, America included, have child labor laws preventing 14 year olds from working. A kid with no job having $3,252 is a lot of money.
If you think that room is awesome, take a look at this! http://www.dannychoo.com/post/en/26384/Ultimate+Otaku+Room.html
OMG u r right those pictures r way more insane!
what's with the long ass thumb nail??
I did some calculations. ¥250000 is enough to buy:

- About a thousand volumes of used comics or more
OR
- 416 volumes of new comics (¥600 each)
OR
- 119 volumes of anime if bought 70% off (¥2100 each)
OR
- 35 volumes of new anime (¥7000 each)
OR
- 11 of those large figurines (¥22000 each)
THIS IS MY ROOM. LOL.
Good luck bringing a girl back to that room = P
he missing one thing, anime dvds!!! maybe have some in his itouch. it mostly 100% otaku for a guy room. you can tell in his room. im surprise his parent would be kinda mad having half naked girl in his room
1. where did he get the money for all of that?!
2. yeah i would like to have a room like that except since im a girl the posters would be of hot guys...
3. his nails are frakng long!
I've never actually wanted to start working before... my mind has been changed.
---___---- I may love anime and manga to death but I don't see myself doing this especially since I'm trying to get a girlfriend and since I'm in college. His room looks fun but that seems like overkill. lol @ him seeing that much anime/manga in only 7 months. He makes most otakus look like scrubs.
He has a ridiculously huge nail on his thumb...
I'm so freaking jealous. It's all so organized!! And CLEAN!!! Omg I want his room.
OMG i would be happy with 1 of those anime poster because i have none or maybe one action figure , but he has like 100 + posters , and action figures and other stuff 0_0... OMG he is one HARDCORE OTAKU. I just wonder why doesnt he cut his nails ....
A real world manifestation of what it looks like after giving up on dating a real person any time soon. ***Not for the squeamish***
