Project Runway All Stars

Ep 3: In Which Our Contestants Design a Dress for Miss Piggy

It's Week Three of Project Runway All Stars, and host Angela Lindvall, better known in our house as "Faux Heidi," kicks things off by announcing that the designers must each create, "A flamboyant red carpet cocktail dress for one of the most famous fashionistas in the world." Wow. Will it be Kate Middleton? Daphne Guinness? Madonna? No—think bigger. And pinker. It's Miss Piggy!

The designers are ecstatic when they learn who their client is. We're happy too, because we think that for once, they'll be designing for the body of a real woman—well, a body more like a real woman's than the models whom they usually dress. Alas, this is not the case. The All Stars are told to create the garments for their usual models, and then the winning dress will be remade in the proper size for Miss Piggy to wear while promoting the new Muppet movie. Unfortunately, there is a big problem with this. When this episode was initially filmed, it was to be broadcast in tandem with the opening of The Muppets. Unfortunately, the All Stars season was delayed, so the film's opening came and went, and we never saw Miss Piggy in her gown. But, for the sake of this episode, we will suspend disbelief on this topic—and, of course, one other...

Balenciaga Channels Patti Smith for Spring 2012

It seems like Patti Smith is everyone's muse these days. The 56-year-old just covered the winter style issue of T Magazine, and this week Balenciaga dropped a Smith-inspired add campaign, which stars four relatively unknown models channeling the poet-rocker circa 1970.

Miss Piggy To Guest Judge on Project Runway All Stars Tonight

Miss Piggy in the The Muppets movie
If you've been sitting out this season of Project Runway All Stars, tonight might be the night for you to jump back in. Miss Piggy is making an appearance, and the Francophile muppet should be a welcome antidote to an otherwise slightly bland judges panel.

And actually, despite being a puppet, and a pig, we think she is far from the worst role model a group of aspiring designers could have.

Think about it: Miss Piggy totally knows what it's like to start at the bottom and work her way up in the fashion industry, having begun her career as a shop girl, then struggling as a model for years before eventually hitting star status. And as we learned in the most recent Muppet movie, Piggy even landed a gig as plus-size editor at Paris Vogue—an impressive career trajectory by any standards.

Naturally, Versace for H&M; Resort Has Made Its Way to eBay

2012_01_versace-x-hm-cruise-2012-ads.jpg

Today was the day for those overseas who wanted to get their hands on the fruity Versace for H&M; resort collection, except that Fashionista reports that the H&M; website crashed this morning, leaving lots of customers very sad at their computers. At 6:30am, they tweeted this apology: "We're very sorry for the tech problems during today's #VersaceforHM launch. We're working on expanding capacity for more visitors." Later, they gave an official statement, formerly apologizing for not realizing just how many people actually wanted this stuff.

So, now what? Shop it on eBay. If interested, here's the link for the 49 50 items currently available to US eBay customers, with the most expensive piece being this black duffel bag for $429. A small price to pay for nylon canvas, a detachable strap, some leather detailing, and that refined logo.

This week, we take you to the Fashism headquarters at General Assembly in New York. For those who have yet to try it, the site allows you to upload a photo of your outfit, ask whether or not it's a good one, and receive feedback from others doing the same thing. Since they see, oh, tons and tons of good (and bad) outfits a day, you can consider the team behind Fashism experts in the styling game. Here's what they wear to work.

Brooke Moreland, Cofounder and CEO: My style is pretty feminine. I'd say it's kind of a grown up urban bohemian. I love wearing vintage clothes, fitted dresses, and high heels. I like for my clothes to be cheerful and fun. I also like to mix it up, and I like to experiment with different styles.

Brooke is wearing a Reiss dress, DKNY tights, Payless shoes, a bracelet from a booth at the Eastern Market in DC., and a Banana Republic bag.

Style advice: Don't buy anything unless you absolutely love it. And if you absolutely love something, find a way to justify buying it.

Wren's Latest Lookbook Was Inspired by Lana Del Rey

Say what you want about Lana Del Rey's SNL appearance, the girl's got a great look going, and we're not the only ones paying attention. Wren's just-released spring lookbook features pieces inspired by a mix of classic Americana, '70s cinema, and "modern influences," including Del Rey's music. The relaxed, '70s vibe of the collection walks the line between hipster and boho, much like the chanteuse herself—Coachella goers, take note.

First pieces from the collection will drop February 15, with prices ranging from $63 for cotton tanks and tees to $372 for silk dresses, and you can find it online at saks.com and Wren's website. Check out 20 of our favorite looks in the gallery above.
