Week Two: Who Was Best Dressed at Cannes?
It's a wrap for the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, and this year the fashionistas all brought the glitz and glamour to the red carpet!
The second week saw just as much fabulous couture as the first...
Best & Worst of Cannes: From the Palme d'Or to the Palme D'oh!
Cannes is two weeks of amazing fashions, A-list stars, colorful flameouts and, oh yeah, films. With the festival now a wrap in the South of France, it's time look back on the best and worst of the fest.
As expected, the Brad Pitt and Sean Penn starring Tree of Life, directed by Terrence Malick, won the festival's big award, the Palme D'or. But Cannes is about way more than just the official winners list (though of course we've got that below, natch). So get ready for all the scandalous moments, sparkliest gowns and surprising star turns on the jump.
And...Action!
Whose Star-Spangled Celebrity Spawn Is This?
When you're the descendant of an uber rock and roller, it doesn't take much to unleash your inner star.
Such was the case when this 19-year-old, blue-eyed actress hit the carpet at Cannes Friday and struck one fierce pose in a Miu Miu star-covered frock. She was looking good in service of her new film at Cannes, in which she acted opposite an A-lister.
So whose kid is this up-and-comer? (Hint: Her dad's known for his rock anthems and his major charity work)
Sean Penn's Rock 'n' Roll Nazi Hunter Saves Cannes!
After Lars von Trier's "I'm a Nazi" debacle this week at Cannes, Sean Penn's quirky film about a depressed rock star hunting down a concentration camp guard seems like just what the festival needs!
Looking like a bad photocopy of The Cure's singer Robert Smith in the film, Penn plays a semi-innocent man-child hunting down his father's tormentor in a quirky road picture by Il Divo director Paolo Sorrentino.
So what did Penn have to say at today's press conference, and which rock star has an extended cameo in This Must Be the Place?
Cover Your Eyes, Leo! Bar Refaeli Gets Bikini Revenge in Cannes
Bar Refaeli tweeted out the above pic of herself relaxing on a yacht in Cannes on Thursday with a caption that read: "Yup. Can't complain." Although, she might as well have written: "How do you like me now, Leo?"
Of course, that very same question could easily apply to any one of the recent sightings of the supermodel as she's made her way around the south of France in the wake of her breakup with Leonardo DiCaprio.
There's been the Chopard party, where Bar turned heads in a blue and black sequin Roberto Cavalli minidress; and at the Beaver premiere, the gorgeous gal simply stunned everyone on the red carpet.
Sure, Leo might be enjoying the company of the likes of Blake Lively in the very same city, but still, c'mon now!
EXCLUSIVE!
Vanessa Hudgens Talks "Obnoxious" French Guys, New Flick and Twitter
Vanessa Hudgens has a message for potential suitors: Down, boys!
The newly single actress said she dealt with some overzealous men while partying in Cannes this last week.
"Towards the end, some French guys got a bit obnoxious," she said of the male attention she received in the south of France.
But that doesn't mean her first trip to the film fest was a total loss:
Cannes Bans Lars von Trier for Hitler Comments
Well, that was fast. After Lars von Trier's strange press conference at Cannes yesterday, where he joked about being a Nazi, said he understood Hitler and suggested that his next film might be called The Final Solution, the director has been banned from the Cannes Film Festival.
In a statement released today, the Cannes board of directors declared it "firmly condemns these comments and declares Lars von Trier a persona non grata at the festival."
UPDATE!
Lars Von Trier Announces "I'm a Nazi," Jokes About Hitler, Jews, Final Solution
Update: At the behest of Cannes officials, the director was asked to provide an explanation for his statements, and issued the following comment via the festival's website.
"The director states that he let himself be egged on by a provocation. He presents his apology."
____
Controversy-monger and maker of occasionally watchable films Lars von Trier shifted into shock-jock mode today during the Cannes press conference for his film, Melancholia.
Really kicking it up a notch, the experimental filmmaker responded to a question about the "Nazi aesthetic" with some gems. "I understand Hitler. I think he did some wrong things, yes, absolutely," said the director. "I sympathize with him a little bit."
Yeah, these are what he considers jokes, people. Read on for more hilarity.
Shirtless Mel Gibson Ducks Beaver Press Conference for a Smoke
It's a film about a man pretending to be a beaver, but at Cannes Mel Gibson was more like a duck, as in, ducking the press conference for Jodie Foster's The Beaver. Maybe it's fitting that a man playing a character who can only speak his mind through a puppet is fine with letting his film director pal do all the talking.
But how to explain Mel's casual mode of chill-axing "sugar tits"-style on his hotel balcony in Antibes, France, before walking the red carpet in nearby Cannes?
We think it's just so he can say he cleans up real nice at the premiere. But read what Jodie had to say about Mel at the press conference below.
Single Leonardo DiCaprio Living It Up in Cannes
If Leonardo DiCaprio is broken up over his breakup with Bar Refaeli, he's certainly not showing it.
The newly single actor has been partying in the South of France, and he hasn't been lacking for female company.
Leo was spotted on a yacht looking friendly with none other than Blake Lively, and on Saturday he was front and center while Kanye West performed at a private bash.
Partying right next to him was another pretty, famous face, but it's probably not the girl you're thinking...
