HTV (1968-2002)

Harlech Television served Wales and the West of England. It won the franchise from TWW with an impressive pitch to the ITA, lead by its chairman, Lord Harlech. It abbreviated its name to HTV with the advent of colour in 1970 and was unique in providing two completely separate services - HTV West and the bilingual HTV Cymru/Wales. A third, the "General Service", broadcast a mixture of English language programming from Wales and West until the end of VHF transmissions in the 80s. Production output was mainly regional, although HTV West made some notable drama and children's programming for the network. Cymru/Wales Welsh language productions moved to S4C in 1982 and a new studio complex was opened at Culverhouse Cross, Cardiff in 1984. HTV was purchased by United News and Media in 1997, passing to Carlton in 2000. The HTV name disappeared in October 2002, rebranded as ITV1 Wales and ITV1 West. Carlton assimilated and merged with the Granada Media Group in 2004.
