A sensitive approach to the environment

Since the site investigation process first began in early 2006, we have taken into serious consideration and addressed any effects the Blythe Solar Power Project could potentially have on the environment. For that reason, when we submitted a Right of Way (ROW) application to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), we submitted a site location whose use would have a minimal impact on the surrounding desert environment and local animal species.

The Blythe project site was extensively analyzed for any potential impacts on local species of plants and animals as part of our adherence to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA).

During the public comments period of the environmental review process, several nationally recognized environmental organizations recommended additional mitigation. Several of their recommended changes were incorporated into the final NEPA document and included in the project development plan.

Changes we have made to the project design and site included some redesign of the facility itself and the incorporation of dry-cooling technology that would reduce the facility’s water usage by approximately 90 percent.

To effectively address impacts to the environment and the local species, Solar Trust of America, LLC will purchase habitat on private land that would be placed in conservation in perpetuity.
