June passenger traffic growth strong, freight flat - 04/08/2011
Montréal, 04 August 2011 – Worldwide passenger traffic grew significantly in June, up nearly 5 percent worldwide over June of 2010. International traffic saw a 6.2 percent increase and domestic traffic was up 3.6%. Only the Africa region saw a decline, largely due to civil unrest in several major North African markets. Commenting on the trends, Andreas Schimm, Director of Economics at ACI World noted: “June results are very robust closing off an excellent second quarter against the background of numerous challenges. Passenger traffic growth was firmly supported by higher demand in Europe pointing to a positive summer holiday season while results in Latin America/Caribbean remained strong despite many flight cancellations due to the volcanic eruption in Chile. Other airports in the southern hemisphere in South Africa and Australia also suffered from the ash cloud causing some traffic declines there. All in all, passenger demand seems very healthy and resilient defying a somewhat shaky and erratic post recovery period in key national economies”.

Traffic growth slows but still hits 7% in July 2010 Freight recovery continues at 18% - 02/09/2010
Geneva, 1 September 2010 – ACI World’s monthly PaxFlash and FreightFlash reports show that passenger travel continued to grow in July but at a slower rate than in previous months. ACI Director Economics, Andreas Schimm comments, "Growth in the passenger and freight sector is likely to have peaked in the second quarter. As of August, passenger numbers will compare against positive growth in the reference period of 2009, whereas for freight that will only be the case from October. Therefore the last quarter of 2010 will see a return to more ordinary growth numbers in the single digits. That being said, 2010 so far has beaten expectations and the recovery is well on track. Regional differences remain, however, and may become even more pronounced as the development of economies in the U.S. and Europe appear increasingly uncertain and show a tendency to slow down again."

In the first quarter 2009 airports registered an alarming downward spiral yet since mid-year we have witnessed the return of demand – first for domestic and now for international travel. For sure, we are comparing November 2009 against November 2008, the month which had the biggest traffic losses in that year. Nonetheless positive passenger growth in all categories – overall global, international and domestic – indicates that the industry remains on track for a rebound.

Geneva, 22 December 2009 - Airports Council International (ACI) Director General Angela Gittens announced annual airport economics results today. "The financial data for 2008 reflect the year’s business environment: early year positive results, and then the financial turmoil that rocked global markets and provoked a stark economic recession. Airports revised expansion plans in many cases and continued to devise efficiencies to enable their long-term capacity needs. The cyclical nature of our aviation business means has taught us that we must look beyond the current situation, no matter how tough, and prepare for fundamental demand trends. Our communities need that stability and count on us to continue operations in a safe, secure and environmentally friendly manner.

ACI Monthly Traffic Statistics - July 2009 - 02/09/2009
GENEVA, 02 September 2009 – Global passenger traffic in July 2009 showed positive signs of stabilisation, according to the ACI PaxFlash report. ACI World Director General Angela Gittens comments, “This is a scenario where we can draw optimism from a negative. Although overall traffic is still lower than 2008, the gap is narrowing significantly. Total traffic worldwide was down by 1.2 percent in July, but reflects a rising growth trend when compared to declines of 5 percent in June and 8 percent in May. It may still be too soon to assume the worst is over, but results in a few key markets are most encouraging.
