Brand history:
Celebrating its centenary in 2008, Cadbury’s Bournville dark chocolate has a long and interesting history. Launched in 1908, the brand included cocoa and other chocolate assortments. As its popularity grew, variants of the classic bar were added over time:
1920s - Bournville Fruit & Nut; Bournville Orange; Bournville Jordan Almond; Bournville Fruit; and Bournville Brazil Nut;
1930s - Bournville Ginger; Bournville Wholenut; and Bournville Roasted Almond.

Most of these variants only lasted a few years or were discontinued with the advent of World War II in 1939 and the subsequent period of chocolate rationing (this only ended in 1952), with only Bournville, Bournville Roasted Almond (discontinued in 1981) and Bournville Fruit & Nut (discontinued in 1981) surviving. Bournville was renamed Bournville Dark in 1982 and then reverted to Bournville in 1986. A new Bournville Mint Crisp variant was added in 1997 and a high cocoa premium bar called Bournville Extra Dark in 2002. Bournville Deeply Dark, made with 60% cocoa, was launched in 2007 and was also available in a coffee variant.

In March 2009, Cadbury launched two further delicious Bournville variants - Cadbury Bournville Old Jamaica and Cadbury Bournville Orange. Bournville Old Jamaica is a raisin and rum flavoured dark chocolate, which makes its return to the Bournville range by popular demand. Bournville Orange is a brand new variant and is the classic Bournville dark chocolate containing pieces of real orange.

Target audience: Predominantly the choice of an older generation of chocolate lovers. The new Bournville Orange variant is recruiting younger female within the brand.

The Bournville brand’s initial purpose was to strengthen the case for trade mark registration of the Bournville name. The application for Bournville’s official trade mark was applied for in August 1909, a year after the brand’s launch, and was subsequently granted.
