The mess that is Ocean Marketting (yes we misspelled that on purpose) and its operator, Paul Christofolo, sure created quite a stir by the end of 2011.  A rude, asshole-like response to someone inquiring about their order for an N-Control peripheral, the Avenger Controller, made the front page of Penny Arcade, and the rest, as they say, is history, with Christofolo thrusted into a negative spotlight and plenty of Internet buzz.  But how did this whole thing conclude?  Would you believe that things actually got more ridiculous?

The dedicated area was created partnership with the National Science Foundation, Startup America Partnership, CNet and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), showcasing innovative start-ups and entrepreneurs. Owned and produced by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the 2012 International CES, the world’s largest tradeshow for consumer technology, is scheduled January 10-13, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Japanese game giant Square Enix is making its way to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2012) this year. The game maker is setting up shop at the Palms Resort and Casino in one of the exclusive Fantasy Suites. Square Enix will showcase its biggest titles of 2012, including IO Interactive’s Hitman: Absolution, the PlayStation Vita launch title Army Corps of Hell, the puzzle game Quantum Conundrum and Final Fantasy XIII-2. Kim Swift, who helped design Valve’s Portal, talks about her new puzzle game Quantum Conundrum in the exclusive video interview below.

Sonic the Hedgehog has had a splendid 2011.  There, we said it.  But he really has.  Between Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing for mobile platforms, the awesome Sonic Generations and the surprising return of Sonic CD in downloadable format, Sega really brought him back to, ahem, speed.  And he's not slowing down in 2012, as the company has announced the follow-up to his original Sonic the Hedgehog 4 adventure.

Here we are, 2012, and already we're seeing a bunch of movie trailers indicating upcoming projects that will be in 3D.  Disney has already confirmed that Marvel's The Avengers will be in that format; the upcoming Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance from Sony will benefit from the third dimension; and remakes of Titanic and Beauty and the Beast will soon hit theaters with the 3D touch.  But perhaps the biggest title to use the format arrives next month, when Star Wars officially steps into the 3D realm with a re-release of Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Warner Bros. Pictures is set to release the first part of director Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14, 2012. The 3D epic is being shot in collaboration with 3ality Technica in New Zealand. One of the big movies of 2012, the first trailer for The Hobbit is below. And you can bet that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has a new game set in this movie universe coming in time for Christmas.

The Star Wars Battlefront series has become a beloved property of the LucasArts digital empire over the past few years, with open battles between both good guys and bad guys, and numerous options for players to hop in on both sides.  Star Wars Battlefront III had been rumored for some time, but with the demise of longtime development team Pandemic Studios, it was put in doubt.  However, some interesting online moves have indicated that another developer could be working on the long-awaited sequel.  Could be, mind you...

As a dark harbinger of things to potentially come in other markets, Sony has not been able to attract Japanese gamers with its new PlayStation (PS) Vita portable gaming device. During it’s first week at retail in Japan, the game system sold 320,000 units (although that only covered two days). But in its second week (and first full week) on store shelves, Sony enticed a meager 72,000 gamers to buy its pricey new hardware. Even the old PSP outsold the new PS Vita by 40% over Christmas.
