FINAL REVIEW (VERSION 1): It's very foolish to review a game before fully exploring it. I think so many of us were so impressed, so, relieved and so excited by Skyrim when we started it, we all really really wanted to believe that it was GREAT. We wanted to believe that Bethesda had 'DONE IT', and transcended the design limitations of Oblivion. Skyrim really does offer a GREAT ENVIRONMENT, great atmosphere, wonderful ecology. At first it feels so wonderful roaming the valleys and hills, when all is new and expectations are sky high and being fulfilled. BUT. The fun factor just disappears as the hours go by. Then the TRUTH is obvious. This game really is NEARLY the same as Oblivion and Fallout 3. Sadly Fallout 3 is probably BETTER (IT has more humour. Once again we have a land too big. Once again we have locations too many. There are 320 or so 'distinct locations', believe me I have seen more than 90% of them, but they are NOT functionally different really. Individual dungeons remain really good, but the problem is you get stuck in terribly boring rotations from dungeons back to the towns. And what noxious towns they are! Full of wooden wind-up doll NPCs endlessly spurting he same stupid lines! irritating immortal quest givers who just rail off a series of identically bland and boring quests! Its NOT FUN, and it just gets worse and worse. The new character system is supposed to be an improvement. Take off the rose colored glasses. IT ISN"T. Levelling up is a dull, boring eventuality, where you are stuck between choosing a whole lot of crappy perks you would rather not have and which are never enough to fully open any of the stupid perk trees, even if there was any advantage in doing so. Characters are become bland demi-gods in the end anyway. You can kill any monster, open any chest, but there is no joy or challenge in any of that. i think I ended up with about 300,000 in gold and NOTHING to buy with it! There are no mechanisms to create an end game. There are no challenges. There are ZERO unique or challenging battles, its ALL procedurally generated FILLER. The WHOLE GAME. There are also ZERO interesting items to find in the game, since if you pursue smithing and enchating you can actually make better gear yourself. And so on and so on and so on. A sense of anticipation and enthusiasm had everyone rushing off to review this game as 9-10/10. Unfortunately Bethesda will take that as a blessing to make the same facking pizza again next time, as they have in their last 4 major releases! Skyrim provides a few improvements on the Oblivion formula in terms of world creation, yet the new character levelling system ends up being less fun. It's a game that is very exciting when all remains hidden and mysterious, but the more you do in, the more you see, the more you find that it is finally a very dull, very uninpiring, and very BORING game around the time you have spent 80 hours and approach level 50. Not the GOTY after all. DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE YEAR. If this is your exprerience please come back and re-write and rescore this facking game DOWN before Bethesda make the collosal mistake of believing the good press that this is a great game. Its a pretty good 10-30 hour game, but it ends up in the toilet after that. Timothy Rawlins. timtimjp@yahoo.com Read More »
