SYNOPSIS:
In the aftermath of his epic battle with Piccolo, Goku embarks on an electrifying quest to rescue his fallen friends from the realm of the dead. His perilous journey will take him to the heights of Korin Tower – and beyond – as he searches for Kami, a mystical being with the power to resurrect Shenron and restore the magic of the seven Dragon Balls!

But even if Goku succeeds in raising the dead, there's no guarantee he'll live long enough to enjoy a reunion with his slain comrades. The World Martial Arts tournament is just around the corner, and an eerily familiar foe known only as Junior wants to teach Goku the true meaning of pain! To survive the tournament and finally earn the title of World's Greatest Martial Artist, Goku must train his mind as well as his body in order to complete his amazing transformation from a bushy-tailed boy into a man to be reckoned with!

Contains episodes 123-153.

REVIEW:
It’s the final and most critical season of Dragon Ball for fans and for Goku! This is where he goes from boy to man, from hopeful hero to the real deal. With Shenron gone, there’s no way for Goku to resurrect all his fallen buddies so he travels far, really far, to go to Kami, a guy that lives in a temple above the clouds. Goku travels higher than ever before in order to find a way to bring his friends back from the dead. Kami is moved by Goku’s determination to save his friends and promises to revive Shenron on one condition – Goku has to hang out for 3 years and train with Kami.

That’s a big done deal for the little dude who would do anything for his pals. His friends are brought back to life and then Goku goes through a series of gruelling trials to train his mind, his body, and fortify his soul for a new enemy lurking in the darkness.  He moves faster than lightning, takes a fishing trip to learn stillness, big concentration to master his spirit energy, and must defeat his double! The next world martial arts tournament comes and this time a new enemy is about to emerge.

The fights at the tournament bring faces old and new along with surprises a plenty. Goku is now a teenager on the brink of adulthood. He’s no longer the little tyke everyone tried to kick around.

Battles include Tien against the now cyborg mercenary Tao. He survived after the incident with the Red Army and is here for payback. One battle sees a proposal happen. Yamcha gets his ego handed to him when a weird and feeble guy named simply Hero hands him his butt in battle. Goku and Tien face off against each other in a rematch that gets brutal fast. Then it’s the finals with the big bad finally showing his true face. Piccolo Jr. is there for revenge and revenge only. If Goku loses to him, he’ll not only lose his life, but the world will be destroyed along with him!

It’s a match between two goliaths of martial arts. The battle is savage and Goku’s will to win is fierce! In the aftermath of the fight of all fights that spans six episodes, the action doesn’t stop. Goku and Chi-Chi are set to get married but the Ox King is in trouble. A mystical flame threatens to incinerate him and his home unless Goku and Chi-Chi can find a way to stop it before it’s too late.

Their journey takes them to the top of a mountain where a giant guardian refuses to blow out the mystic flame lest evil spirits are let loose upon the world. So Goku and Chi-Chi try a daring, potentially suicidal move to fix the furnace and save the Ox King.

It’s a fun way to end the series with one last adventure and then close the series off with Goku’s wedding, finalizing his transition from boy to man. It’s my favourite season out of the original DB series because it holds the whole transformation of Goku to the man we know him as in Dragon Ball Z.

EXTRAS:
Extra goodies include FUNimation trailers, textless songs, and a 24 page booklet that has profiles of the heroes and villains, background info, and summaries of all the episodes in season 5. Plus there’s the Marathon Feature option to watch it all with just the opening at the very beginning and the credits at the very end with all the episodes on the disc in between with no opening and closing to worry about in between the middle episodes.

IN SUMMARY:
Goku transitions from boy to man, from hero to legend, in the final stunning kick butt season of Dragon Ball!
