National Cask Ale Week 2011

CAMRA would like to thank all licensees, brewers and pub goers for making this year's National Cask Ale Week such a resounding success!

National Cask Ale Week is a campaign organised between CAMRA and Cask Marque with the objective of getting more people trying real ale and encourage more pubs to organise real ale events.

National Cask Ale Week aimed to:
  • Encourage non-real ale drinkers to try real ale for the first time
  • Encourage experienced real ale drinkers to visit real ale pubs throughout the week
  • Encourage non-real ale pubs to stock real ale for the first time
  • Encourage pubs to organise a number of real ale events to increase trial and improve their trade
The dominant theme for this year's week of celebration was 'Try Before you Buy', with Cask Marque's 7,500 accredited pubs sent promotional material to champion the initiative.

The week kicked off with good news, as research from CAMRA showed that 52% of British drinkers had now tried real ale, in stark comparison to in 2008 when only 35% had tried Britain's National Drink. Further research from the Cask Report painted an equally bright picture in showing how Britain's 7.8 million real ale drinkers are more than twice as likely as other drinkers to visit the pub once a week or more.

National Cask Ale Week was toasted in pubs and at festivals across Britain, with CAMRA branches working with licensees and brewers to help attract new drinkers to real ale.

Some of the exciting ideas included beer passport schemes at pubs such as the Rose and Crown in Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire, and the Fox and Hounds in Houston, Renfrewshire. Meanwhile, pubs such as the Carlton Arms in Cambridge introduced third pint measures into their pub for the week to allow locals to sample different beers. Many pubs even took on the daunting challenge of laying on special beer festivals to mark the week. Hoopers in London, SE5 even laid on a Champions Beer Festival complete with a meet the brewer session and a book signing with CAMRA author Des de Moor.

Timed to coincide with the launch of Cask Ale Week, Cask Marque launched the new Ale Trail section of their app. Available for iPhone and Android, "The World's Biggest Ale Trail" offers customers the chance to use their phone's camera to scan QR codes placed on Cask Marque certificates in each of their 7,500 accredited pubs. The Trail was a great success, with 948 people participating in the initiative, and over 2000 people downloading their main CaskFinder app during the week.

Thank you again to all those who participated in this year's National Cask Ale Week, and keep supporting British real ale!
