Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy V and VI dated for PSN

Square Enix's Winter of RPGs campaign bringing classic adventures to Sony's online platform beginning November 8.

Square Enix has for the past couple of years steadily trickled out some of its venerated catalog of role-playing games through the PlayStation Network. This winter, PSN users will see that collection substantially grow, as Square Enix announced today that it will soon rerelease Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy V, and Final Fantasy VI through the platform.

Dubbed the "Winter of RPGs" campaign, Square Enix's rerelease slate begins on November 8 with Chrono Cross. Having received top marks from reviewers upon its release for the original PlayStation in 2000, Chrono Cross went on to be named GameSpot's Game of the Year in 2000. Its similarly acclaimed predecessor, Chrono Trigger, arrived on the PSN in early October.

Chrono Cross will be followed by Final Fantasy V, which is due for release on the PSN November 20. Assuming the role of Bartz, players attempt to preserve a set of elemental crystals that have been used to protect the world from the sorcerer Exdeath.

The final addition to Square Enix's Winter of RPGs campaign is Final Fantasy VI, which will arrive on December 6. Originally released for the SNES in North America as Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy VI follows the love-lost and memory-bereaved supersoldier Terra, who embarks with a group of companions to save the world from the clown mage Kefka and Emperor Gestahl.

Thanks again!!!!!! The sad thing is... It has been online for 21 days now and I am just finding out... OH WELL!!!! WELCOME BACK SERGE AND KID!!!!!!

This is going to be a very merry Christmas!!!! I already got Chrono Cross, and am more than likely going to get the other 2. FF6 was probably the best game I ever played. It just proves that you don't need pretty graphics to make an epic game. If you haven't played FF6, at least get that one if you aren't going to get the other 2. And thank you Square Enix. That couldn't have been a better Christmas present, except for maybe a new FF game(hint, hint)

Edit: It's the 22nd and FF5 still isn't on the store. What gives? Did they push back the release date or something?

Double Edit: Gamespot got the date wrong. It wasn't supposed to be until the 22nd according to the article on the Playstation website, and the store just got it!!! If you don't see it in the PSOne Classics section, use the search feature. You'll find it there.

@hadowysea07 Actually playing it on a DS is no that much better actually. In fact there is really no difference. I have played it on both, and the sound quality is still scratchy, and there is still alot of choppiness. There is a little less choppiness, but not enough to make it better. Who ever told you this, does not know what they are talking about. The GBA port is heavily flawed, and the only thing it has going for it is a new translation. Even the extra dungeons are just plainly tacked on and add nothing new....they seem half assed.

@TheTrueMagusX1 I heard when played on the ds its better. yes the gba version when played on the gba isn't that great.

@shadowysea07 No the GBA version is the worst port. Sorry, hands down it is. Now the GBA does have a good translation, but the sound and graphics are poor and choppy. Though there are some minor loading times, the PS1 port is a better working edition with less technical issues than the GBA port. THe origina SNES Final Fantasy III Cart though(VI) is the best version of the game. And also the GBA version cut out a complete scene from the game as well.

  • shadowysea07

    Posted Nov 4, 2011 1:45 pm GMT

from what i read on the forums ff6 best version is on the gba (though its sound quality is much better when played on the ds due to gba having only one speaker). the worst version is the ps1 port. and this version will fall in the middle likely.

  • shadowysea07

    Posted Nov 4, 2011 12:50 pm GMT

@HollowNinja and its possible they could be worse than the original versions. you'd have to ask people wh already played them in other regions and maybe the wii versions to see how well they work. I'm still iffy on whether i would want to buy them however when i can just get the better versions on other systems.

  • shadowysea07

    Posted Nov 4, 2011 12:42 pm GMT

@HollowNinja they are direct ports of the original versions just like they already did for the wii so likely there will be no improvements.

I would love to revisit Chrono Cross again but Square I need you to release another cult classic...Vagrant Story. Many gamers have yet to experience this amazing game. Matter of fact, please develop a sequel posthaste!

Chrono Cross is understandable (and AWESOME!), but FF5 and FF6... again? Sigh, how many times has Sony re-released these games, just on different platforms? (Besides, isn't FF5/6 already on the PSN? Hmm)

Sony, please do to FF5/6 what you did to FF4 with the "Complete Collection" for the PSP. Not necessarily sequels for them, but just a re-haul on the graphics to make them more up-to-date. I already own so many different versions of FF5/6, I honestly am just "meh" whenever they're just being re-released.

Also, PLEASE BRING LEGEND OF DRAGOON TO PSN! That game kicked so much ass.
