• Summary: Croteam's Serious Sam 3: BFE is a glorious throwback to the golden age of first-person shooters where men were men, cover was for amateurs and pulling the trigger made things go boom.

It's a lot of fun indeed. A lot of backbreaking, grueling, soul-destroying fun.

Serious Sam 3 does what it set out to do and nothing more. A faithful and heartfelt ode to old-school FPS carnage, it certainly delivers the dumb fun that Duke Nukem Forever so dismally failed to recapture - and that, for many retro-heads, will be more than enough.

It's disappointing that despite its great level design and adrenaline-fueled shootouts, Serious Sam is not always fun to play. But that's the fact of the matter. Unless you can deal with a wide range of frustrating quirks, you're probably better keeping this one off your Christmas list.

  1. This game is as much of a blast as the other games, but I found the addition of RELOADING to be very annoying, at least during the early levels of the game. Once you get down the road a bit, the pump shotgun, the pistol, and the assault rifle kind of become obsolete. The devastator still has to be reloaded, but it's got a 20-shell clip. I welcome sprinting with open arms. It lets you traverse the massive landscapes much quicker. People need to get over themselves regarding these new gameplay additions. I'm tired of people screaming the term "CoDified" and whatnot. This game is HARDLY like CoD. Just because it has iron sights on TWO guns doesn't mean it's trying to be like CoD. Anyway, the humor is toned down quite a bit, at least compared to SS2. That's not to say it's not funny though. I found the crappy dialog and the poor choreography to be brilliantly done, which sounds really contradicting, but that's exactly why I find it hilarious. It's like a parody of itself. It's different from Croteam's usual formula, but I think it's that way on purpose. Anyway, not much else to say. It plays and feels like the other Sam games. I guess the optimization for low-end systems could be a little bit better. I basically run it maxed out on a dated machine because I'm a graphics glutton, but it runs ok in single player. I have to put it on low settings when I play online though, otherwise it lags too much. I still get some stuttering though. Hopefully Croteam will release a patch or two that includes some performance fixes. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. first of all, i am very sorry for my english, i' writting from argentina what happened to this game? the animations are horrible... especially the melee ones (check 3rd person view) and the strafe ones... even QUAKE 3 does strafe animations correctly in EVERY SINGLE MODEL (and yes, there are a lot of them) its very funny how croteam decided every single charater should wear sunglasses to cover the lack of facial expression also why sam model has a pistol but he can only use the one he founds on the floor? I don't understand why Sam likes Hellfire... is the ugliest girl in the world, I know he is in the middle of the desert and there are no other girls... but she looks like a lesbian or something. also she says sam has a "mini gun"?? WTF? I though duke nukem was the one full on steroids that shrinked his d♥ick and what about NO COVER ALL MAN? the full game was designed to force the player to take cover. most of enemies are hitscan, you cant dodge the shoots so YOU MUST take cover... also the poor level design privileges mid-long range combat rather than mid-close combat (as TFE, TSE and SS2) this was supposed to be the redemption of the old-school fps and croteam promised to show the big budget companies how to make games, but what we got was the opposite... when TFE and TSE were released, croteam took the lead and show us HUGE enemies, TONS of them in excesively big levels, and weird/bizzare rooms with odd gravity, spikes, traps... I specially remember that bouncy room on TSE. THE SERIOUS ENGINE 3 DOESNT EVEN SUPPORT THE CYLINDRICAL ROOM FROM TSE BUT FOCUSES ON MAKING FLASHY LIGHT EFFECTS!!! now i feel like croteam is a little boy trying to be like his big budget multinational daddy and failed miserably, the game looks very unfinished compared to any other modern game but worst of all its not introducing something new to the game industry croteam made another forgettable game, i was really looking into this new game, i really wanted to support the indie developement, im really dissapointed. im really sorry if someone is offended with this commentary, its not my intention, i just want to tell you this because i still want to believe COD havnt won... but this game hurts my feelings because i feel with "no cover all man" they had a very interesting concept that wasnt respected. to read more: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2251725 Expand
