Petition asks Obama to destroy all copies of Skyrim

UPDATE: Satirical website Christwire at work.

UPDATE: The petition reported below is in fact the work of satirical website Christwire. It was a joke and we fell for it. Sorry guys!

ORIGINAL STORY: A concerned US citizen has petitioned The White House to destroy all copies of Bethesda's acclaimed RPG The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and prosecute anyone caught playing it.

As reported by Kotaku, one B Stephenson of Tennessee submitted the following list of demands to The White House's We The People site:

We petition the Obama administration to: Immediately Ban the Deadly Videogame Known as 'SkyRim' for The Safety of America's Youths.

"Whereas videogaming has proven to cause social, ethical and health problems in people of all ages,

"Whereas sexual perversion and homosexuality are threatening to destroy the Christian foundations on which this nation was built,

"Whereas a new video game has just been created that far exceeds any others in the psychological and spiritual damage it does to teens,

"We, the American people, today ask you,

  1. To enact an immediate ban on the videogame known as 'SkyRim' produced by Blizzard Entertainment.
  2. To seize and destroy all copies already in public hands and erase its presence on the internet.
  3. To prosecute the players of 'SkyRim' to the fullest extent of the law.
  4. To create a national database of videogame avatars and 'screen names' so that teenagers can be better monitored."

Any petition that manages to attract more than 25,000 signatures from the American public within 30 days of publication will garner an official response from the administration.

The Skyrim petition currently boasts ten.

Aaaaahhhh, nobody does full strength nutter like the Americans.

Why Skyrim of all things when Saints Row the Third has just come out and is FAR more objectionable for whatever brand of Christian militant this weirdo is?

How come all conservative nutjobs hicks who think the US is a christian nation and give us a bad reputation get full court press news cycles in the media? Mentally imbalanced people can't really attract so much attention can they?

I just think its bad representation of the US as a whole. Its such a small amount of people compared to the rest of us, they should technically have no voice. That also goes for a lot of people inside Washington, including more politicians than i can count

I am appalled at the crap that passes in the US, so many people like to hide behind religion to serve their own selfish agendas. Christianity is one of the biggest that people use to their own means, check out those right wingers in government talking about being against abortion, yet those same people won't vote down tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. Gotta love how it's only right when they say it, people are incredibly funny and full of pride. One day it will all come crashing down on their heads wait to see what they claim then.

I tell you there has to be some other people observing this planet from afar and they are probably are laughing so hard at the madness and the lying self serving agenda protecting (so-called) religious folk running around in power. They pretend to be religious where eyes can see, but really are just like everyone else they label as lost or sinners. Eeep, hope I didn't step on anyone's toes, I might not get my sainthood, because you know a bunch of non perfect humans can judge whether I can go into heaven or not...right...when they can show me accommodations of heaven in a brochure I'm not believing that crap.

Christwire is a satire site, everybody. Calm down.

Incidentally, being a friend on Facebook with Stephenson Billings is great. The amount of deliberate, hilarious homoeroticism in his posts and photos is wonderful.

Yeah, because Skyrim (Oh, I meant "SkyRim") is the worst thing out there right? lol. Nothing will come of this, because it's ridiculous. If you're caught playing it, you'll be in trouble? lol What the ****? I'm sorry, but Skyrim does have a Mature rating here in the US, so kids shouldn't be playing it anyways. I guess we better ban movies and arrest you for watching Friday The 13th now, because there's violence in it. I wish this guy would wake up and look around, there's violence everywhere.

"Whereas sexual perversion and homosexuality are threatening to destroy the Christian foundations on which this nation was built,"

I thought their nation was built on stealing land from its natives and claiming it as their own? Though I find it shocking that they think people who are gay are destroying their Christian foundations. That and of course Skyrim which is clearly a game made by the devil himself :/

Hmm, two weeks to date of article (probably less time before he actually filed the petition)...That sure is some reeealll in depth scientific research done on the effects of "proven social, ethical and health problems in people of all ages" y'all.

These kind of people are actually usually VERY dangerous in terms of the psychological abuse and damage they do children, young people, women and vulnerable people.

we should all petition to have THEM locked up. Just watch some of Louis Theroux's documentaries on these kinds of people. Scary shit!

  • v21v21v21 #38 24 hours ago

  • Caimbeul #39 23 hours ago

@kwospecialk - "I thought their nation was built on stealing land from its natives and claiming it as their own?"

Erm but wasn't it mainly us British and the Irish?? when rushing to the frontier land and settling most of the USA? I'm no history buff and am happy to be corrected by someone in the know.

  • Zaiz #40 23 hours ago

@Caimbeul There were people in North America LONG before the British got to it, plowed through everything like a steamroller and called it theirs.

  • Zaiz #45 23 hours ago

for all the people making ridiculous assumptions:

Gay marriage is fairly popular in America(70% of americans approve). The problem is that conservative politicians pander to their base.

Our country was built on taking land from natives. So was every other country, the only difference is we did it 300-100 years ago. Technically, we bought land from the French, Russians, and conquered it from the Mexicans, but overall we were really just taking it from natives. On that subject, the European Colonial period was our inspiration! Yay!

The US frontier in the 1700s was mostly captured by minority immigrants, the poor, and a few freed slaves. Basically, a dutch community in one place would spring up, and germans wouldn't want to live with the dutch so they'd go out a little farther into the wilderness. Same thing with religious groups and other ethnic groups. It was basically a tidal wave of cultural disagreements that conquered the frontier of the 13 Colonies.

The 1800s was when the US Army took charge, partially to defend the interests of settlers and partially to just get the Native Americans out of there.

    >__> I'm pretty sure no one will care about this, but since someone asked there ya go.

@Zaiz - "Have you guys ever stood back and realized that someone, somewhere is making a joke? >___> As mentioned above, this is related to Christwire"

The thing is this sort of thing does happen and how would anyone reading the article know it was linked with Christwire (which I haven't even heard of).

By the way, how do you know it is to do with Christwire? (not saying it isn't, just interested where the link is)

Edit: Not quite sure why I got negged for that. Was it because I said these things do happen? In a world where Harry Potter books get burnt for teaching kids to believe in witchcraft this is not an impossible situation. Or was it because I asked about the link to Christwire? This article didn't mention it and Kotaku only said 'maybe it's linked'. When reading 'this' article why would anyone have got the idea it was linked to Christwire?

What I don't understand is - all the quotes above could be related to ANY game by the hate mongerers, so I am still baffled as to the reasons they want Skyrim boycotting. Those reasons are general and vague, and not title specific. So I'm a little baffled as to the original reasons against Skyrim (even if just for the comedy factor).

Well u know we are talking about rednecks. They have no problem whatsoever to watch human organs in the csi shows or extreme violence, or have guns, but if they see a tit they freak out!

what's really cool, is that evidence keeps amassing to that children playing games compared to their non-gaming peers are; in better physical shape, better in social interactions and more creative ... let the crazy folk continue to ramble, they'll simply be outbred in 1-2 generations :-)

As a level 43 Redguard Battle Mage, there's no way Obama is taking this petition seriously... He too busy tracking down the Rueful Axe.

  • Raziel #147 11 hours ago

What if we all sign this and see what happens?

"It was a joke and I fell for it."

    Fixed.

  • dennett316 #151 9 hours ago

@Clash People didn't "get it" because it was just some random petition when it was originally reported and, frankly, I've read worse lines of bullshit coming from other fanatical God-botherers so it read as pretty genuine.

Americans it seems don't get satire as the first rule is usually to let people in on the joke...and they didn't do that with the text in this petition, it came off as pretty standard.

Fred Dutton - Forever proving you don't have to be good at a job to get paid.

A lot of people in this thread - Proving that they are just as thick as The Daily Mail.

    Poe's Law hits again.

  • bad09 #154 9 hours ago

    LOL never mind EG :)

To be fair though some of the god squads out there are so insane (especially in the USofA) you would never know it was a joke without it being pointed out that it was a joke :)

  • HeNiCiDe1988 #155 8 hours ago

loool be hilarious is he did!

  • Olemak #156 7 hours ago

Journalists do not "fall for jokes", they "fail to check their sources".

  • danidrums #157 7 hours ago

@FireMonkey I don't expect Eg to do a lot of things, like Drama, and still we got that Borderlands eulogy.

  • andy10 #160 6 hours ago

I wish people would lay off the personal attacks on Eurogamer staff. They're people too. Okay, a journalist was mistaken, but we all got a bit of fun out of it.

  • Aizen0324 #161 4 hours ago

I really wish Christians knew what they were talking about, like all the time. But no a vast majority of them think they know what they are talking about and make the religion look bad...

Regardless, this still is the stupidest thing I've seen... Today

  • Videogamer. #162 4 hours ago

So glad this was a joke. Sheesh. :)

  • Clash #163 4 hours ago

    @dennett316

I would've hoped that the "Blizzard entertainment" and "SkyRim" bit would've been enough to make people question it. Then the over-zealous nature of how to handle it.

To be honest I'm surprised that Eurogamer fell for it.
"UPDATE: The petition reported below is in fact the work of satirical website Christwire. It was a joke and we fell for it. Sorry guys! "

They'd have been better just saying "We trolled you".
