Kojima: Metal Gear Solid Rising might be "hard to get into"

You'll need to be "open and willing to try new things".

Some franchise fans might find Metal Gear Solid: Rising a little tough to get to grips with, according to series creator Hideo Kojima.

Speaking in an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, Kojima suggested that the game is something of a departure from the series' stealth-orientated roots.

"If somebody thinks 'I love Snake' and just really wants traditional stealth gameplay and that experience, then it may be hard to get into Rising, but for people who are more open and willing to try new things, it shouldn't be a problem," he said.

"Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 4 was received very well, and I wanted to keep going with that direction in Rising. The people who liked him in 4 will like him in this, but it's a personal preference."

The long-in-the-offing title is expected to get a full re-reveal at the Spike VGA event on 10th December.

As far as I'm concerned a series need only be connected by canon or by themes and doesn't need both. Still, I think that Metal Gear Rising would roll off the tongue a little easier...

Shall give the gameplay a fair chance but Poochie the Dog will always be one of the worst characters ever designed.

    What will I cut?

    I will cut EVERYTHING.

  • coolbritannia #4 1d ago

    God himself will be cut.

  • MattEdWithCheese #5 1d ago

    As will Watermelons!

  • _Price_ #6 1d ago

That's fair enough, but to be clear: QTEs and chest-high walls aren't 'new'.

"need to be open and willing to try new things".

Yeah I'm not falling for that shit again.

it's not at all disturbing to want to butcher humans for fun.

I am guessing MGS rising is going Ninja Gaiden.......... i hope to be wrong.

  • 5lectro #12 1d ago

Well, it originally took me about half an hour to get through the very first room in MGS1...

I still suspect that "The Truth about Metal Gear Solid 5" will be that Metal Gear Rising will be it.
Think about it: Kojima wanted to do new things for a long time now (and I like to think everybody supports him in that), but MGS5 kind of 'needs' to be made. If Rising is true to the legacy, it might fit the bill just perfectly.

I think that looks awesome. I'm guessing the gameplay will be very different from traditional MGS games, although the cut scene fetish will likely continue. Sign me up.

    @Deckard1 Anal?

  • superfurry #16 1d ago

Well that just looks awesome to me.

On the downside Keith Vaz is also currently wanking himself into a frenzy over the knife-crime soundbites he can dish out over this.

@funkateer a sequel to 4 which is actually based on an event BEFORE 4, of which those who played 4 know raiden dies in 4 is MGS5?

    Yeah....sure.

It's clear from the off that apart from Raiden, this isn't a MGS game in any way, shape or form. There's practically no stealth, no long cut-scenes and no guns involved. I don't know why they just can't call it "Rising." Every MGS fan will recognise it, it doesn't need to have the name in the title to confirm it.

IMO the MGS story is finished. Big Boss has no more unexplained links or tales, Snake's story is finished as well and all the antagonists have been taken down. Kojima is a vice president at Konami so he's under no pressure to continue the series. I love the MGS series, it's one of my favourite ever, but the majority of fans are in agreement in that they just want the series to end now.

Finally, I just don't find the story of Rising exciting. Sure, all we know right now is that Raiden is on a mission to rescue Olga's daughter from the patriots, surely they'd have to come up with a whole new cast? Unless they re-cast Ocelot and co again which would feel too familiar.

I liked Raiden in MGS 2. Because he forced you to see the situation as a newcomer would, and put you in awe of Snake. I think that was the point, what with the MGS-sim plot etc.

Just hope it doesn't turn into a Japanese Soap Opera like MGS4. (big let down) :(

    P.S.
MGS3 is one of my favorite games of all time.

I sincerely hope the enemy dudes don't die if you slice off their gunhand. I'm the sadistic kind of jerk that wants to watch them ineffectively trying to 'nub' me to death or run around screaming for a couple seconds.

Maybe just take of a part of his foot and tip the guy over, y'know.. fun stuff

  • TazerFan #23 20h ago

What is it with Kojima and Miyamoto and the emo interview excerpts?

  • SimonM7 #24 19h ago

Probably significantly easier to get into once it's a video game.

  • menage #25 17h ago

Oh man, already making excuses. New ideas are fine, as long as they actually work.

  • WickedDeeJ #26 17h ago

Well since MGS4 was nearly crushed under the weight of fanboys and Konami suits wanting more of the same old, I'm actually happy to see this. MGS as a series has its better games when Kojima is actually pushing creative boundaries, so I'm happy about this.

"open and willing to try new things"

My girlfriend won't like it then

  • Shinomo #28 16h ago

Just to clear something up here; Raiden does NOT die in MGS4. I always found it odd that people keep saying that he does.

Anyway, I expect Rising to be fun; that's all I need. The cutting mechanic looks interesting (if not a little cumbersome) so I'd really like to see it come to fruition and used for more than just cutting watermelons and people; the potential for puzzle-solving excites me (though I doubt it'll have much of that).

  • Sodding_Gamer #29 16h ago

I am not surprised considering they changed the phrase to "lightning bolt action" Obviously a bold move gameplay wise. At lease Kojima said he will have to make an MGS 5 ;)

  • HyperShadow #30 15h ago

I too would find it hard to get into a game that isn't realeased and has been fairly low key in the years since it's announcment.

Also, all those people who thought Raiden dies at the end of MGS4 obviously didn't have the time to sit through the 2 hour ending movie at the end of MGS4

  • Lucodeath #31 8h ago

Why is raiden wearing high heel shoes?

  • LEONOFDEATH #32 6h ago

Yeah, In 4 he wasn't anything like snake was. Anyone expecting normal stealth stuff after that is silly.

  • ROCK-NYC #33 5h ago

I guess they are trying to cover their ass early for for bad reviews/sales.
