Easy PC goes bust

Hopes to refund customers.

Respected UK PC retailer Easy PC has gone bust, leaving some customers out of pocket.

The Barnsley-based, two-person company ceased trading yesterday and has begun the process of going into liquidation.

Owner and Managing Director Martin Weston told Eurogamer those who have paid for goods with a card will get their money back - all they have to do is contact their bank or PayPal.

PayPal will then start a claim with Easy PC, which requires the company to show proof that it is in liquidation. That should then trigger a refund.

Eurogamer reader Toeragus is one customer affected. He was notified of the closure by Easy PC over the phone after spending thousands on a high end rig.

For legal reasons Easy PC is unable to say what it will do for those who did not pay with a card, but said this applies to fewer than seven people.

"But because of the type of company we are, we do feel a level of personal responsibility," Weston said.

"Legally there is no entitlement to them and there's no responsibility for us to pay them back unfortunately, but that doesn't sit well with us, so we are looking at ways to remedy that."

Weston said Easy PC was "killed" by the recent floods in Thailand. "It left us with a build list of orders where we lost money on all the systems we made in October and the start of November. We shipped out 40 to 45 systems all at a loss.

"Since then, with the price increases to match how much the hard-drives are currently costing, the sales have gone to less than 10 per cent of what they were last year. Our margins have been too small."

    Floods should be banned :(

  • haritori #2 1d ago

Shame, but good on them for doing the right thing many others wouldn't.

  • Adamical #3 1d ago

I'm sorry to hear that, to be honest.

    Good luck to all affected.

it's good they are trying to honour customers, but would be surprised if they did actually repay anyone who paid without a card.

why would they, if they are bust and have no obligation? where is the money coming from?

they don't need to show goodwill on a brand name that is dead, unfortunately.

just tellin' the truth motherfuckers! sorry it's not an ideal world.

    Sorry to hear that :(

Sad sad sad. I funnelled as many people as I could to Easy-pc over the last few years.

So long Martin and Co, thanks for being a first class PC outlet with actual honest to goodness customer support. Good luck in the future.

@Zomoniac - and deaths and loss of livelihoods from said floods while we're at it.

  • Buztafen #9 1d ago

Not even Dirtbox could save them...:(

  • mrpon #10 1d ago

As a fellow funnelee I'm a tad gutted here :(

Great shame. Had one of their PCs for a while now and when my PSU shat itself they were sorted it out without any hassle. Hope they manage to bounce back in the future.

These Thai floods are hurting the entire industry right now and things aren't going to improve for a while.

On the upside DRAM prices are crazy cheap. I picked up 8GB the other week for £39.

@ Dirtbox - yes, I purchased my gaming system from them just over a year ago, thanks to your recommendation.

I still have two years left from my three year warranty, too.

I had a little trouble with my computer a month or so ago - the guys at Easy PC not only repaired my computer, but it came back with a better graphics card! I feel a little bad about that, now - I hope it wasn't the final nail. :s

All in all, a great little company, and one that will be sadly missed.

I've never even heard of them, but now I regret not spending all my money on them. I feel a personal responsibility for their liquidation.

    "Fewer than seven"

    6?

  • MisterSlimm #16 1d ago

this applies to fewer than seven people
Isn't that a strange way saying 'it only applies to six people'?

  • orangpelupa #17 1d ago

    @mister
maybe the legal things prevent them fro mclearly sayin 6 people. Sometime legal things prevent saying specific things

by saying "less than 7" they do a workaround the legal bind.

A month or so ago I bought a hard drive for £60, which spiralled up to £170 the next week due to the floods!! No wonder it's having such knock on effects.

What's the best place to buy a competent, cheap gaming tower?

  • coolbritannia #22 1d ago

Since then, with the price increases to match how match the hard-drives are currently costing
Did he really say this gibberish or has Wesley struck again?

  • memeroot #23 1d ago

    Scan is worth a look

  • marmaduke #24 1d ago

@anthonypappa - it's a two man company you idiot, not some huge multinational. Just because they've gone into liquidation doesn't mean they won't be able to repay funds that haven't been spent.

  • Marshall2008 #25 1d ago

Cheapest way to get a hard drive is to look for external units at around 1 - 2TB in size from high street retailers. You can get a 1TB unit for around 60 quid if you can find them (PC world are doing WESTERN DIGITAL Elements External Hard Drive - 1.5TB £59 at the mo). Then just crack it open and stick it in yer PC. Other than that don't buy anything new till next year :(
