Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk announced for iPhone, iPad and Android

Out next month.

Codemasters has unveiled the new Dizzy game it teased yesterday.

Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk is a special HD edition of the 1991 classic for iPad, iPhone and Android, and is out on Friday, 9th December.

The iOS and Android editions of Dizzy: Prince of the Yolk are developed by DNA Interactive and Paul Ranson, the game's original project director.

"20 years on and Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk remains one of the most memorable games in the series for its puzzles and humour and it's an absolute pleasure to return to the director's role for this HD edition," Ranson said.

"For once, this is a retro classic that doesn't require rose-tinted glasses to appreciate its design and gameplay - Dizzy: Prince of the Yolk is simply a great puzzle-solving romp that's been brought up-to-date with glorious visuals."

Screenshots and a reveal trailer are below.

"It always astounds us what a loyal fan base Dizzy still has," Philip Oliver, one of the series' creators, said.

"Even after all these years people remember Dizzy fondly and it's great to see him return for his older fans and introduce him to a new generation of gamers."

Brother Andrew Oliver added: "Dizzy Prince of the Yolkfolk was one of the most popular Dizzy titles and it's exciting to see him making his debut iOS and Android for the holidays."

    Oh dear.

They need to look at what Ubisoft did with Rayman: Origins. Not as big a leap as this I know, but they treated the property with respect and chose an appropriate platform to suit the gameplay, that's all this needs. Outsourcing it to someone like Retro Studios couldn't have hurt either.

    I hate that fuckin egg.

  • danclarke #3 2d ago

I used to be very fond of this when I had my Amiga 500 - that control system looks absolutely horrendous though.

  • TruSmiles #4 2d ago

I'm feeling slightly underwhelmed by this, especially after all the eggcitment of Twitter a few days ago. Maybe cos it's a mobile game only, which feels rather naf.

  • Ryze #5 2d ago

    No 3DS / Vita / XBLA / PSN versions?

    Shame.

  • marmaduke #6 2d ago

Looks a bit... shovelware. Get oeuf my childhood memories!

  • Baban_Iesu #7 2d ago

That title screen loads in a bit quicker than I remember!

  • Britesparc #8 2d ago

I think the graphics are quite nice - the backgrounds almost have a painterly look to them.

But I'm a bit disappointed that this is "just" a mobile re-release of an old game. I was hoping for a new XBLA/PSN adventure.

  • bad09 #9 2d ago

My mrs has one of these android thingies now, I'm not really feeling the gaming without decents controls myself so I'll probably pass.

Maybe when the egg rolls on to PC with something better I'll look but it's good to see the egg back even it is in a mobile game for now.

  • MattEdWithCheese #10 2d ago

Looks like the yolk's on us right...? ....Right?

  • chris_ace #11 2d ago

    hehehe

  • DDevil #12 2d ago

iOS ports of retro games always play like shit. As much as I loved Dizzy as a child I dread the thought of him rolling around and trying to do the more pixel perfect jumps they required with the shit touch-screen controls.

  • Spong #13 2d ago

Control scheme looks awful (like all touch screen games) and I'm pissed off this isn't a release for XBLA/PSN as I hoped yesterday before the facts were known. Never before has such glee and delight at the possibility of reliving a childhood favourite been so dashed.

I'm truly gutted. Call it sour grapes if you will, but I hope it tanks.

Phew, they remembered to release it for Android too, would have been a shame to restrict to iDevices. Would be nice if it worked with the Xperia Play's controls. I've ended up using mine to read books more often than play games.

  • StolenGlory #15 2d ago

Looks like My First Flash Game.

  • FireMonkey #16 2d ago

@Spong - Bit of a silly thing to hope for.

If it tanks, that's it, no more Dizzy, but if it does fairly well they may decide to widen it's market and bring it to other formats. Just look at Angry Birds. Did well on iPhone and now it is on everything.

  • Psychotext #17 2d ago

    Properly disappointed by this. :(

  • MENTAL1ST Senior Software Engineer, Picsel UK Ltd. #18 2d ago

Ha ha! My wife was actually quite excited about the Dizzy announcement, and since it's a phone game, she might now actually buy and play it.

Obviously, not the best news for everyone else, but at least she'll be pleased.

I know it's only a couple of seconds of footage but that doesn't look right at all. The jumping looks too slow and awkward, possibly a compromise due to touch controls.

  • Spong #20 2d ago

    @FireMonkey

Can't say I've ever heard of Angry Birds, I've Googled it and apparently it's some iPhone game. Regardless of how popular it is or isn't (I don't know), it's certainly not available on XBLA.

But I see your logic. However, it doesn't stop me from feeling bitter over the fact that my hopes yesterday have been dashed. And seeing as that Angry Birds game isn't available on the console I own, I have no reason to believe that Dizzy selling well on iOS will mean anything.

OMFG. What have they done to it?!?

    It looks fucking wank!

    *sigh*

  • saku_luk #22 2d ago

Hmm, when I played this on C64 I don't remember everyone being so happy... what's with those smiles? :D even that Troll is happy...

  • Desheep #23 2d ago

No dedicated server support announced as of yet.

  • Phantom_Dynamite #24 2d ago

Give us HD Treasure Island and Fantasy Dizzy on console Codies...

Don't force me to break some eggs

  • joesploggs #25 2d ago

I reckon a new game in Dizzy series has got to be in the works. My favourite thing about this news... it's out in just over 2 weeks. A teaser on Monday, a trailer on Tuesday and released just over 2 weeks later. That's the way to do it... I'm talking to you Bioshock Infinite!

  • layleeloo #26 2d ago

I was eggcited when I heard about a Dizzy return yesterday - not that has been shattered if its for touch devices. Balls.

  • mr_bez #27 2d ago

@Johnson81 - The jumping was always that slow and 'awkward'.

  • Jonny5Alive7 #28 2d ago

Fastfood Dizzy was actually my favourite, it was basically a Pacman clone but better imo.

  • Doctor_What #29 2d ago

The jumping does look wrong by modern standards - I expected that the character movement would have been updated.

I love Dizzy, I really do, and I was very excited to hear about this, but gameplay expectations have changed a lot in the last twenty years: directly porting an old game and giving it (notoriously poor) touch controls seems like a recipe for failure. Suffice to say, I'm disappointed.

I hope this turns out to be a spectacular success, but my hopes are low at the moment judging on what I've seen in that trailer.

  • Monkey_Puncher #30 2d ago

My favourite part of Dizzy was when the little shit kept rolling after jumping and went straight into a torch thus turning himself into a fried egg.

Fun back in the day, but I think I'll pass on it now.

  • higgins78 #31 1d ago

    @danclarke

Amiga 500!? The ZX Spectrum versions ruled all else! Agree with you about the rest...I have VERY fond memories playing Dizzy besides it excruciating difficulty yet this iPad version looks terrible. Amazing really that 20 years down the line the original formula still remains the best...

  • andijames #32 1d ago

I remember waiting about 15 minutes for the bastard game to load on my spectrum i wonder if they've managed to reduce the loading times? :)

Seriously though this is one franchise they could definitely do better than an iOS port with. Everyone loves a bit of Dizzy!

  • Dizzy #33 1d ago

I am sorry... I had nothing to do with this, so it can't be good!

  • dadrester #34 1d ago

Looking at his jump it made me remember how eggsasperated navigating the maps used to make me. One wrong jump and you'd fall the 5 screens it took you 20 minutes to climb. I dare say this is a litmus test for the franchise. Dizzy is after all one of codies' most cherished IPs.

looks like it's gonna include the "original graphics" version too.

Also; I don't understand commenters on here. Syndicate is re-imagined as a nice looking FPS by one of the worlds leading FPS studios and everyone cries bloody murder, then this comes along untouched and everyone's still complaining. Make your minds up.

  • TrevHead #35 1d ago

Oh come on! I was expecting something for a real gaming machine not a phone game remake.

While the artwork is ok, with the perspective and contrast between the background and sprites is really shitty imo.

  • OnlyMe #36 1d ago

Hmmm, I hope this will support the pad on the Xperia Play.

  • JadedSoul #37 1d ago

    Art style looks horrifically amateurish.

  • MisterFahrenheit #38 1d ago

No no no no no. Looks fine, no problem with it being on iPhone (really, who expected anything else from a long-dead franchise) and inordinately pleased they've kept the original Dizzy logo.

But so very, very slow and surely it wouldn't have killed them to chuck in a couple more frames of jumping animation. Completely knackers the impact.

  • TrevHead #39 1d ago

^ Dizzy isnt some old franchise, he was a big thing back in the day and alot of older gamers have fond memories of the series.

Total waste of a good IP imo

  • mr2ange #40 1d ago

I still feel the magic when i see the picture loading on ya olde faithful c64...

Good luck to them, I hope it does well, and i dont have any apple or android device.

At least its a character you can actually remember...

  • eminusx #41 1d ago

looks shite, like some over embellished flash game. shouldve kept it reasonably old-school and digitised like the superbrothers sword and sworcery effort some months back.

    fucking 'updates'.

why do they always think people want the raw edges trimmed off perfectly smooth, leaving it utterly charmless.
