Metroid 2 Nintendo eShop release date

Plus the rest of the week's DSiWare, WiiWare.

Classic Game Boy adventure Metroid 2: Return of Samus is re-released this week on the 3DS eShop.

Metroid 2 was the first handheld incarnation of Nintendo's seminal adventure shooter series and sees heroine Samus deployed to exterminate the parasitic Metroid species once and for all.

Originally released in 1991, Metroid 2 is a direct sequel to the original NES Metroid, and precedes Super Metroid on SNES, which leads into last year's Metroid: Other M on Wii.

Also available this week? Jail-breaking adventure GO Series: Escape Trick Rock City Prison arrives on DSiWare, alongside Christmas karaoke game Just Sing! Christmas Vol. 3.

WiiWare gamers get Big Town Shoot Out, meanwhile, a Western-themed cowboy shooter.

    Ahhh finally! I'll be able to play the Metroid game I've never been able to play. I can't be the only person who's always wanted to play Metroid 2 but never had it as a kid.

    Oh if only Nintendo wouldn't charge such silly prices I would be buying loads of games through the 3DS eShop. But the prices really are quite silly.

    Is £3.60 for a classic like Metroid II really so silly? I mean how much cheaper do you want it? You'd easily pay more than that for the old cartridge.

    I mean some of the games are a rip off on the e-shop but almost all of the good ones come in at a reasonable price. Why would you buy the ones that aren't good anyway?

    My issue with buying from the eshop is that they still do not have points cards available for it. Where on earth are they Nintendo? I want to see what the rate is on the cards before topping up my wallet with cash and then seeing them sell £20 cards for £17 :|

    Ooh I'm gonna be all over Metroid 2, I've never played it, despite owning a GB. Now all I need is my ambassador download of Fusion! There seems to be no news on that front. Also, I'd love to have Super Metroid on my 3DS too, that'd be lovely.

    I managed to complete Metroid 2 once on my GameBoy but god knows how I did it. Any time I've tried to replay it recently I've very quickly become hopelessly lost. I think I've been spoiled by Super Metroid onwards with the mini-map and full-screen map.

    I know exploration is a big part of Metroid, but the old monochrome graphics in Metroid 2 make all the areas in the game look very similar.

    Hmm, still wondering where the Ambassador GBA games are. With their absence from this week's list, that leaves only five weeks left in the year.

    @berelain I kinda have to agree with you on that one. I mean £3.60 for a 19 YEAR OLD GAME (a freaking Gameboy game at that), is IMO a piss take. I know its Metroid and all, but just because its Metroid that still doesn't excuse price gouging. I mean by today's standards its worth nowhere, nowhere near £3.60. If it was an IOS game on the app store nobody would pay £3.60 for it.

    Yet seemingly when it come to Nintendo people don't seem to mind being ripped off, heck they seem willing, eager even. Honestly I just don't get it.

    @Toothball - I wish they'd clarified what "before the end of the year" meant. But then, Metroid Fusion would be a nice Christmas present :)

    It's not bad value if you compare it to anything but the app store. I don't think I will get it as playing the original metroid on the 3ds just made me want to play Super Metroid instead

    I have never played Metroid 2 either. Not surprising though because I missed the NES one and even Super Metroid back in the days as well. It all started with Prime for me - thanks to the ambassador release of the NES original I will definitely give this a try as well because I quite enjoy the NES one. It has aged better than I thought it would.

    @Cobalt_Jackal not everyone likes the cheap crap that people class as games on the appstore i mean come on a game about throwing paper in a waste bin
    not to mention pieces of shit by the name of angry birds and cut the rope only casual gamers would moan about the eshop prices and also moan about paying 40 quid for retail games what woul you rather pay at retail 69p? if yes then get a fucking life and stop playing videogames

    @Cobalt_Jackal the only reason appstore games are cheap is because they cost thousands rather then millions of pounds it takes to develop for consoles and handhelds plus the games dont need to be transported to shops or stored in warehouses which cost money to hire how else do you think publishers pay for storage and transport and advertising that is why retail prices will never match the 69p starting price of appstore games anyway java games are dearer then appstore games seeing as they start from a better price point of a quid up to 5 pounds

    Why should age have an influence over the price of a great game? 19 year old game or not, it's a great game. It's a guarantee that it would have had more care and attention put into it than most of the 79/99p iPhone and iPad games. Get over yourself.
