New Words on the Way

Is your family preparing for the new missal translation?

Are you counting down? Just 18 days to go!

Until we switch to the new missal translation, that is. It’ll be implemented in American parishes on November 27th, the first Sunday of Advent.

At our parish we’ve already started singing the diocesan-mandated set of new Mass parts in preparation, but it occurred to me this week: we’ve only got two Sundays left to say the English words of the Mass I’ve always... READ MORE

Answering the "Why" Questions

How would you respond?

This weekend, I received a relatively frantic email from a mom of a very inquisitive four year old. In her note, she asked for input to answer two specific questions her little philosopher has posed to her:

1. Why did God make me?
2. How did God make me?

Somewhere in the depths of my memory, this little boy’s first question “Why did God make me?” elicited a response I’d learned years ago from Lesson 1 of the Baltimore Catechism:... READ MORE

Who Is Your Favorite Saint?

...and why?

This year, more than ever, All Saints Day feels to me like a major celebration. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been so immersed in the lives of the saints due to the launch of my new book, A Book of Saints for Catholic Moms - the virtual “book tour” I’ve been enjoying has me answering the question “Who is your favorite saint?” multiple times per day.

And the truth is, every time I’m asked the question... READ MORE

Happy Feast Day! What Did You Hear?

Best wishes for a happy feast day, Everyone!

How are you celebrating and what did you hear at Mass?

Our celebrant cracked us up by remembering some poll he read shortly after Mother Teresa passed away.

“Do you think Mother Teresa is in heaven?” the pollster asked.  65% thought she was.

There were various other questions, including the final one: “Are you going to heaven?”

93% of people were sure they were going to heaven!

Respondents were more certain of their own sanctity than Mother Teresa’s!

His reflections flowed from there.

What did you hear?

Have A Plan for the All Souls Octave

a quick reminder

Just a quick reminder—since Saturday is the typical parish Confession day—that not only Halloween & All Saints Day are upon us, but also All Souls’ Day, and an entire octave of days to release souls from Purgatory.

You’ll find a quick reminder of the hows, whys and wherefores at the link.
I was grateful for the advanced notice!

P.S. Fr. Z. indicates there that we’re to pray for the Holy Father’s “monthly intentions.” This is the first time I’ve run into that qualifier—I’ve always understood “Holy Father’s intentions,” generally—whatever they might be. From the point of view of intent and fulfillment of the indulgence, I’m certain it’s fine, since the latter includes the former. Just curious if that’s a new one on anyone else.

Please Pray for Jonah's Mom

In today’s Coffee Talk discussion, a mom named Ashley shared a link to her heartbreaking story of the unexpected death of her infant son Jonah last week.

I know the faithful community of moms here will not fail to hold this family—and especially his mom Ashley—in prayer during this time of mourning. Jonah is in good hands, but his grieving family needs our love and support.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord.”
—Psalm 121

Getting ready?

What are you doing to prepare your family for the new translation of the Mass?

Last night again at Mass, as I read a very helpful document in our parish bulletin on the upcoming changes in the Mass, I was struck by how very quickly this new translation will be a part of our lives.

For those looking for helpful resources, I would point you to the “Welcoming the Roman Missal Third Edition” section of the USCCB website. It is filled with very helpful resources that you can use... READ MORE

A Thought For Sunday

From a homily of Pope Benedict’s at a mass organized by the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization comes this quotation from St. Augustine:

“If Caesar claims his own image engraved on the coin,” he affirms, “will God not exact from man the divine image sculpted in him?”

Living With Christ

another monthly missal option

Here’s an embarrassment of riches.

Literal embarrassment in my case, since in my post about daily missal use below, I should have highlighted Living With Christ, published by the same folks who bring you this very site.

Living with Christ is a monthly missalette published all around the world by Bayard, Inc, which also publishes Faith & Family magazine.

At this link you can watch an introductory video, download a sample, or sign up for morning prayer delivered daily to your mailbox.

I have to shamefacedly confess to our bosses I wasn’t aware until today we had a missalette in our stable of publications, but I’ll definitely be checking it out and hope you will too!

What a blessing it is to have so many options to help us live the Mass well—and how encouraging that there is an audience thirsty for such things.

Waiting For Magnficat

Do you follow the mass with a missal or missalette?

I cop to a completely prosaic reason for looking forward to the translation changes coming to Mass in English this Advent.

I can finally justify a subscription to Magnificat!

When I first joined the Church, I was instructed that “active participation” in the Mass meant uniting ourselves to its action, truly praying each part and making an offering of ourselves to the best of our ability.

I found... READ MORE
