UPDATED REVIEW: Skyrim is a worthy contender for GOTY. This game has a number of flaws and imperfections: The UI is NOT one of them. To base a review of the game on the flaws is an injustice to the many things Skyrim gets right. Here are a brief list of reasons to get this game: (1) Size, Scale Content. This is a big game. There are many things to see and do. (2) Atmosphere, Immersion. Once you forgive the occasional fall-off of graphics quality in the snow zones and the glitches, it is exciting to explore and discover the many secrets hidden in the wilderness of Skyrim. (3) Character Development. while not perfect, the system allows near total freedom to build your own destiny and style of play. (4) Replayability. This game has one of the greatest amount of replayability of any single player game yet made. If you enjoy Skyrim, expect to enjoy it for YEARS. Skyrim really does improve on Oblivion and Morrowind. While in some ways it feels uncomfortably close to a 2006 level of technology, disappointment you may initially feel about that tends to evaporate the longer you play. The dungeons really are hand crafted and more interesting. Dragons and the shouts really do give the game an added buzz. The wilderness really is a pleasure to explore. Crafting is there if you want it but can be ignored if you find it tedius. Magic is there and a pure mage build is viable, but can be ignored totally if you wish. Skyrim gives choices, and it places the player in the center of its world allowing you to decide how you want to play and how you want to define your character and your gaming experience. Skyrim is NOT perfect. The game is limited by the great barrier to game design in 2011: The processing power of this console generation. Within that inevitable limit though, Skyrim is a MASTERPIECE of game and scenario design. Scoring it 0/10 is ridiculous, 4/10 foolish, 6/10 miserly, even 8/10 too harsh. It delivered what they promised and it delivers hundreds of hours of enjoyable wandering and power-play. Hats off to Bethesda and thankyou. Looking forward to seeing the game 12 months later with more patches, more textures and fully optimised/modded/rebuilt for upper spec PCs. This game isn't really even finished yet. When it is will be mind-blowing. This game really does take the crown for best western RPG. This game really does set a new high standard for the industry. The best thing will be how it challenges competing developers to make games that can do better. Can't wait to see what Bioware or CD projekt will come up with if they finally get serious and do their best game, the way Todd Howard and the team have managed with Skyrim. Also can't wait to see what Bethesda will dare when the next generation of consoles come out. This is the START. THE BEST IS YET TO COME. Read More »
