Unveiled at E3 in May 2004 as the successor to the Game Boy Advance handheld line, the Nintendo DS was a system that encouraged innovation from developers with a range of unique input options. While the system featured a standard button layout (D-Pad, six face buttons plus two shoulder buttons) it also featured two screens, with the lower screen acting as a touch screen, a microphone and the ability to connect wirelessly to other systems or a wi-fi network connection.
The system was released in the United States in Nov 2004, closely followed by Japan in December and Europe the following March.
A number of system modifications followed. The Nintendo DS Lite, released in 2006, was redesigned as a smaller, sleeker model. The Nintendo DSi, released in 2008, removed Game Boy Advance cart compatibility in favour of an SD Card slot, two built-in cameras and an improved user interface, including online game store DSiWare. The Nintendo DSi XL was released in 2009, sporting the same features as the DSi, but with larger screens.
