Another day, another milestone.
St. Francis Prep won its 14th straight CHSAA state title in girls tennis Wednesday afternoon, blanking St. Joseph by the Sea, 5-0, to pick up its 201st win in a row.
Katie DeRienzo won in first singles, 6-0, 6-0; Lisa Ventimiglia cruised in second singles, 6-0, 6-0; and Samantha Rosco-Sipot prevailed, 6-0, 6-0 in third single. Marylen Santos and Jacqueline Kelly won, 6-0, 6-0, in first doubles, and in second doubles Jennifer Mukofsky and Rossella Scarpa were victorious, 6-0, 6-1.
The Terriers season resumes in the spring when they go after a record 13th straight Mayor’s Cup crown. St. Francis Prep nearly lost last year to burgeoning PSAL power Leon Goldstein, but prevailed, 3-2, behind Santos’ dramatic three-set win in third singles.
Coach John Brennan expects to meet Goldstein in the finals again and is optimistic of his senior-heavy team’s chances.
“The only question is we have all these seniors and sometimes they one foot out the door [in the spring],” he said. “If they commit to playing their best in this Mayor’s Cup – and I think they will – we should be favored.”
