Job Description and Person Specification

Location: St Albans, Hertfordshire

Department: Marketing

Responsible to: Head of Marketing

Salary range: £25,000-£27,000

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) is a not-for-profit organisation that campaigns for real ale, real pubs and consumer rights. The organisation has experienced an annual membership growth of approximately 10% for the last three years.

Membership now stands at over 130,000, all of whom are consumers who help campaign on a variety of different beer and pub issues.

The organisation is currently setting its Strategic Plan for next 5 years and is looking for a talented individual to drive forward the marketing of CAMRA's membership.

The successful applicant will be responsible for all aspects of CAMRA's membership marketing including recruitment, retention and activation of existing members reporting to the Head of Marketing.

The Department

CAMRA's Marketing Department is responsible for marketing, publicity and media relations for all CAMRA's activities at a national level and for advising and supporting local CAMRA volunteer groups with their own marketing.

The department is responsible for the marketing of CAMRA's campaigns, membership, books and events. The current department consists of 5 staff:

  • Tony Jerome - Head of Marketing
  • Jon Howard - Press Manager
  • Chris Lewis - Marketing Officer
  • John McCann - Website Officer
  • Lauren Anderson - Marketing Assistant

Management is friendly and informal in a busy environment with complex and heavy pressures.

Overview

The position is a full time, permanent post on satisfactory completion of a three month probationary period.

Salary: £25,000 - £27,000

Holiday: 24 days plus statutory holidays and the Christmas period

The job will include some occasional evening and weekend work which is not remunerated. A flexible approach to working hours is therefore essential. Time in lieu is offered when possible. Normal working hours are 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday with a one hour lunch break.

Occasional travel to meetings and events in the UK will be required for which mileage and subsistence expenses with be paid.

CAMRA's offices are approximately two miles from the centre of St Albans and about 1 mile from the central station with direct links to St Pancras and Bedford.

Key Functions

  1. The successful applicant will be responsible for all aspects of CAMRA's Membership Marketing. This includes attracting new members from different sectors of society and the retention and activation of existing members.
  2. To develop and implement membership marketing strategies that support CAMRA's Strategic Plan.
  3. To provide professional support for CAMRA's volunteer committees, in particular, the Membership Committee and Young Members Group.
  4. To support the membership recruitment, retention and activation of CAMRA volunteer branches and officials. This will include recruitment support at CAMRA beer festivals.
  5. Liaison with local branches and CAMRA members on membership related matters.
  6. To work closely with CAMRA's Membership Services Department to ensure the provision of an efficient and effective membership facility.
  7. To work closely with CAMRA's Membership Services Department to develop the organisation's Customer Relationship Management (CRM).
  8. To manage a new Online Membership Panel and use it regularly to survey members on a variety of topics. You will be expected to use this feedback to aid your future membership campaigns.
  9. Managing CAMRA's Membership Benefit Partners which currently include JD Wetherspoon, Thomas Cook and cottages4you.
  10. Developing new Membership Partners to create more benefits for CAMRA members.
  11. To manage and produce Membership Marketing material.
  12. Any further duties as reasonably required.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements:

  1. 2 or more years work experience in Membership Marketing
  2. Educated to degree level; achieved grade 2:2 or above
  3. Marketing qualification at diploma level or above
  4. Good team player who is able to work independently
  5. Good CRM experience and knowledge
  6. Strong oral and written communication skills
  7. Ability to analyse statistical information
  8. Creative and flexible approach to work
  9. Experience of working with Printers and Designers
  10. Confident manner to deal efficiently with CAMRA members, benefit partners, volunteers, senior staff and directors
  11. Willingness to work out of normal hours on occasions

Preferred Attributes:

  1. Some knowledge of the brewing and pubs industry is by no means essential but it may help you understand some of CAMRA's aims
  2. Knowledge of CAMRA and our campaigns
  3. Experience of working with volunteers
