The Crucible Theatre, often referred to as the National Theatre of the north, opened in 1971 and along with the Crucible Studio and Lyceum forms part of the largest theatre complex outside of London. Sheffield Theatres’ premier new plays every year and the Crucible has also become famous for hosting the annual World Snooker Championships. Under the inspired leadership of Michael Grandage, the Crucible has welcomed actors and directors such as Kenneth Branagh, Joseph Fiennes, Derek Jacobi and Kathy Burke to the stage in the past five years. A massive refurbishment is currently under way with a re opening schedule of late 2009. With the ‘Next Stage’ redevelopment the theatre is heading towards an exciting new era for audiences of the 21st century.

The Lyceum opened in 1897 and was designed by WGR Sprague, the man responsible for many famous West End theatres, such as Wyndhams, The Aldwych, and The Albery. Following its closure in 1968, the Lyceum endured spells as – among other things – a bingo hall and a rock venue. In 1991 the Lyceum underwent a £12 million renovation, and re-opened with complimentary extensions to the building and a lavishly restored interior. The Lyceum seats 1068 people and now plays host to a varied programme which includes touring West End musicals, contemporary dance, and regular visits from Opera North and Northern Ballet Theatre.

The Crucible is currently in talks within theatrical industry on a new way forward for the artistic leadership to coincide with the new re opening.
