THE Students’ Union at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) was one of just 20 successful student unions in the country to host the Olympic torch.
The London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay is calling on people to nominate ‘future flames’ they know including students who are passionate about sport, music and dance as well as their community and the environment.
The torch tour arrived in a double-decker bus at ARU’s Cambridge campus this afternoon allowing students and local schoolchildren to have their photos with the real unlit Olympic torch.
There are legs of the torch relay reserved for students from the 20 universities the torch relay tour is visiting so an ARU student could represent Cambridge by running a leg with the torch.
President of ARU’s student union Gerald Carew said they had to submit a detailed application form detailing their reasons why the tour torch should come to Cambridge.
He said: “We stated that there’s lots of schools and colleges nearby who could come and see the torch.
“Also Cambridge is such a multi-cultural city and the Olympics is something that everyone can relate to and therefore unite the community.
“We were pleased with how the day went and many students nominated their friends and peers to run a leg with the torch.”
