High There, Biscuits
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Food on Monday, October 03, 2011
You know what’s good? Biscuits. And I love to make them. Five ingredients, a few minutes to put them together, and I’ve got delicious baked goodness fresh from my oven.
But I long ago gave up on flaky biscuits in favor of fluffy dropped ones, because I could not get the hang of the rolled ones. Somehow mine always turned out flat and puck-like.
I recently had a whim and gave flaky biscuits another... READ MORE
Simpler Than Pie

Last week Daria mentioned apple pie and I sighed a little. I will probably get some pie this year when my mom or my sister makes it, but I have no time to make it myself.
Luckily, I remembered how much I love this easy tart recipe. I shared it last summer as a recipe for peach tart, and this is a slight adaptation for apple season. I think it’s perfect - crumbly crust and tender baked apples in sweet... READ MORE
Inducing Labor Day
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Food on Monday, September 05, 2011
It’s labor day, and my thoughts are with a girlfriend who’s a bit overdue and desperate for labor to begin.
She lives in Atlanta, so I had to remind her about the alleged induction powers of Scalini’s eggplant parmesan.
Sounds weird to me, but the restaurant claims to have 300 babies born within 48 hours of their moms eating the dish, so who am I to scoff?
I hope you’ll comment on the oddest labor-inducing trick you ever heard of—or swear by.
Meanwhile, here’s a little feature the Willits did on this bizarre local tradition a couple of years ago.
Summer Taste

When local corn is in season, I’m always looking for ways to use it. I love corn on the cob, but you can only eat so much of that, you know?
So when I saw that The Pioneer Woman had posted a recipe for grilled corn guacamole, I knew I had to try it.
It’s a simple recipe: some chopping, mashing, a little measuring and stirring, and you’re done. And it was delicious. My husband teased me, but I didn’t... READ MORE
Fun in a Basket

Summer time is picnic time, and not just the kind where you throw some sandwiches and drink boxes in a bag for an afternoon at the local park.
It’s also time for potluck picnics at Church, or family reunions, or block parties. The kind where someone says, “Are you bringing that special pasta salad or yours?” or maybe, “I hope you’re making your famous baked beans again—no one else’s tastes as good as yours.” Or perhaps, “if you’re bringing your lemon pie, I’ll be first in line to grab some before it’s all gone.”
Do you have a special picnic food that goes fast at summer gatherings? A super salad? A mouth-watering main course? A savory side dish? A delectable dessert?
If you are willing to share the secret formula for your wonderful creation, please do so in comments!
What's In Your Potato Salad?
Posted by DariaSockey in Food on Wednesday, June 08, 2011
Last week, on a warm afternoon around 4:00 pm, my husband says, “How about something simple and summery for dinner, like grilled hot dogs and potato salad?”
I had to remind him that potato salad is not exactly simple because it requires thinking about dinner much, much earlier in the day than I’m used to — which is normally around 4:30 or so. You have to boil potatoes and get them cooled off well... READ MORE
Choosing Favorites
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Thursday, June 02, 2011
I have noticed something lately, a funny little detail about being a mom and running the show and making lots of choices. Here it is: when it comes to making decisions, I choose what I like best.
That probably sounds like a no brainer, but it has occurred to me lately that I might be inadvertently training my children to have the same yens as me. When I reach for the yogurt at the grocery store, I... READ MORE
Share Some Summer Sipping
Posted by DariaSockey in Food on Wednesday, June 01, 2011
After a recent post where I shared a favorite casserole recipe, comments included variations on my recipe (grill, crockpot), an entirely different favorite meal, and natrually, a question about whether this was meant to be a recipe sharing thread.
I asked Danielle whether we should try a new regular blog feature in which readers could share their favorites, and she thought this was a brilliant idea.... READ MORE
What's For Dinner?
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Thursday, May 12, 2011
Next week we are having very special company for dinner, and I would love some suggestions for a delicious, easy-to-make meal to serve. Here are my criteria:
1. No crock-pot dishes (we love crock pot food of course, but not for company)
2. No grilling (too risky)
3. Something that can be made ahead of time and put in the warming drawer if need be (so I don’t have to worry about the house being hot)
4. A dish that will make my guest and family weep with delight
That’s all I ask. Any ideas? And as always, thank you for your support.
The Teen Lunchbox
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Food on Thursday, March 31, 2011
OK Team, I need your suggestions. Out here in Fresno, we’ve got the lunchbox blues. Perhaps my malaise results from boredom, from too many years of stuffing the same four items into a brown bag and seeing half of it return uneaten, or seeing it forgotten in the back on my car after morning dropoff.
Our lunchboxes are lacking - pizzazz, excitement, and yes possibly good nutrition too!
Now that I only... READ MORE
