Beating the Back to School Blues

Making the most of this annual tradition...

Last night I sent out a telling tweet to my friends:

“My second to last ‘back to school’ night. Is it bad that I’m a bit happy about that?!”

As I’ve shared on the blog before, I sort of get the annual “back to school” blues every year around this time. As a working mom, I’ll admit to a tiny bit of relief when the school schedule kicks back in, affording us a bit of “protected time” and structure.... READ MORE

But that’s what Bargain Jack is calling this collection of tax-free days being offered by various states for the purchase of clothing or school supplies.

The bargains in some states start today, so check it out—it could really pay off to plan your shopping accordingly.

Casual Fridays - Crazy, Busy

Getting five days of work done in four days!

How is it already Friday?  As a busy working mom, I’m looking at my “to do” list for this week and realizing that even though the week is almost over, I’ve barely made it through any of the items on my list.

I’ve decided to cut myself a break though, since it seems that this week was even more crazy than usual.  I’m attributing that to Labor Day, and to the fact that a four day work week means cramming... READ MORE

Back to School Buying

When do you do it?

Marketing is out of control these days, right? Stores fill with Christmas merchandise in October, Valentine’s Day stuff in late December, and Easter stuff before Lent has even begun.

It’s so common that I don’t want to make a cliché out of myself by kvetching about it, so I usually keep my mouth shut.

However, I did a big eye-roll this year when I saw that our local big box stores had Back-to-School... READ MORE

Sending "Baby" to High School

Adam's first day!

This morning, for the first time in many years, I will not drive my boys to their first day of school.  Adam, commencing his high school career, will hitch a ride with big brother Eric, who’s getting ready to start his senior year.

After the last few years of having them both on separate campuses, it feels like a luxury to be able to send them both off to the same school.  Adam is so excited about... READ MORE
