Pink Zebra Rosary Beads

Why not?

I saw this cute rosary at the Catholic Marketing Network Convention last week.

It’s a bestseller from Trendy Traditions, and I believe the name of that company tells everything you want to know about why there should be a hot pink rosary with zebra Our Father beads.

My only frustration at the convention was that most of the merchandise displayed by hundreds of companies was not for sale, but only to show the many Catholic retail shop owners what was available for them to order. So I was not able to buy this rosary for a funky friend who would surely have been thrilled. And since my visit to the Trendy Traditions website showed this item as “sold out”, I will have to wait even longer.

Now, I know people who would take one look at this rosary — or another one with little baseballs for Our Father beads — and think this was silly to the point of irreverence. Although my own tastes in rosaries run to something more classic in polished wood, I think that if the look and feel of a rosary makes you want to use it more often, then by all means — go with cute and themed!

What do you think?

I love them! And I don’t even like zebra print. They definitely bring home the point that the rosary isn’t just for little old ladies! Which, unfortunately, many people still believe.

I think that is an awesome idea.  I have three boys that would be thrilled to have baseball or sports themed rosarys and would proudly show them off to their friends as they’re praying the rosary in church, which would be evangelical to other boys to have their own to pray with.  But they would probably need to be reminded that while they are very cool, they still need to show reverence when they are praying and focus on why they are there.  Great idea.  Hope we can find them here in Nebraska smile

I gave my nine year old that rosary for Christmas this year and she was THRILLED when she found it in her stocking.  It’s really cute and nicely made.

I think they are cute, in a sort of kitschy way.  If it makes the Rosary more appealing to pray, wonderful!  That being said, I’m not a huge fan of making sacramentals (such as the Rosary) too trendy—since sacramentals are objects worthy of holy reverence.  I guess I see it akin to icons or religious statues/images that are portrayed in a cartoonish way.  The Church is beauty & truth & I fear that trying to make the Faith more relevant/appealing/trendy loses some of that.  But…perhaps I’m just looking too deeply into pink & zebra beads!

Well, God Himself is the designer of the zebra print, and He created that shade of pink, so why not?  I think many teenagers would love these Rosaries, and if having one inspires them to actually learn about the prayer and begin praying it, then all the better!

I think it’s great! It wouldn’t be my taste, but like you I have a fun and funky girlfriend who would love it, and if it inspires someone to pick up the devotion, well it’s all good then.  Catholicism is not a stodgy faith, it’s always relevant to today, and so should our devotionals.  wink

The best rosary is the ten fingers God made for me.
