I have found some really beautiful religious pieces at yard/rummage sales. I often feel that I must purchase them so as to “rescue” them from a questionable future. I’ve found a beautiful metal diptych of Our Lady of Perpetual Help from Greece, an old wooden & metal Byzantine style Crucifix, a carved wooden diptych (image of the Holy Spirit on the front & Christ, St. John & St. Peter on the inside), a very pretty 12-inch plaster statue of the Immaculate Conception, a 12 X 18 inch wooden & plaster (heavy!) portion of the Stations of the Cross (Jesus is Condemned by Pilate—it looked like it was once in a Church & made me wonder where the other stations were?), & most recently, 2 6-inch statues from Italy mounted on wooden backs that can be hung on the wall—one of the Blessed Mother & the other of St. Joseph & the Christ Child. All for barely a few dollars each. My younger brother recently purchased a box labeled “religious items” at an estate sale that had a reliquary, several ornate rosaries, an old papal blessing, & a beautiful metal pectoral cross from the Ukraine.
Cheap Thrills

I didn’t actually need a summer purse. I had a nice bag in a light color that would go with everytning.
But when I walked past a display of handbags in colorful prints, I started thinking how nice it would be to have something little more fun, a little more summery, a lot less boring than my safe, neutral-toned standby. But not at department store prices.
Luckily, it’s yard sale season. I hit a few this past Saturday, and for good measure ducked into our parish rummage sale.
Happily for me, lots of ladies have become tired of their last year’s summer purses. Pictured in this photo is what I found!
The priciest one was $6 (the one with the polka dot bow), and the cheapest one was 10 cents (the Kate Spade knock-off on the right).
None of them had much wear, so my only problem now will be deciding which ones to give away to my older daughters. After all, I don’t need this many summer purses. At least, that’s what I keep trying to tell myself.
Are you a summer yard-saler? What are some of the best bargain trophies you’ve found?

And a wonderfully detailed, hand-painted icon of an angel (St. Michael the Archangel?) at a thrift store that the owner gave to me, since he didn’t feel right selling it. More than bargain trophies (which are great!), I find these to be real treasures & I wonder at their history!
I’ve found a lot of things for my son at neighborhood garage sales. I’m not one who likes to shop for fun, and I don’t go out of my way looking for garage sales. But if we’re going for a walk in the neighborhood and we come across one, I always stop and take a look. My husband and I have also found some good furniture pieces this way.
Since I usually dress very plainly, I asked for a Vera Bradley for my birthday and got it. Unfortunately, I do have one or two dresses that it just doesn’t go with…so I’ve been shopping for a more neutral purse and one that is a bit smaller to only carry the bare minimum. But I hate to spend the money on new unless I **LOVE** it, and nothing has jumped out at me yet. Thanks for the idea to shop used! I could spend a few dollars on slightly worn, less then perfect, and not feel guilty at all. I may even hit the consignment shop today.
I found three “famous maker” purses at our church rummage sale last weekend. Total price $11. I don’t usually go to garage sales, but I always check out parish rummage sales. I’ve had great luck finding toys/books and holiday decor. Everything is priced very low and the proceeds usually go to a good cause (mission trip, sister parish, etc.).
Great job! I’m a bust at yard sales .... boo!
yeah these purse are so simple and good looking and the way you written about this stuff is commendable.
Thanks
