Zelda: Skyward Sword review - World's first is 98%, heralds 'best Zelda ever'

ONM delivers first verdict

The first Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword review has arrived, and it's a stellar 98% verdict in the new issue of Official Nintendo Magazine.

The score is the mag's joint highest ever, and ONM claims the first built-for-Wii Zelda is the "best Zelda game ever made".

"Skyward Sword has a lot of heart, backed up by a lot of brains," the mag says. "It's an intelligent and captivating adventure that, through sheer scale and diversity of content, variety of location and ingenious and refined use of Wii Motion Plus, never fails to maintain a firm chokehold on your attentions."

Summing up, ONM's review concludes: "It's not something we say lightly, but the Zelda series really has never been this good."

The release of Skyward Sword coincides with the Zelda series' 25th anniversary, which properly kicks in to gear next week when a Zelda concert hits London's Hammersmith Apollo.

The game's out on November 18. We're very, very excited.

I'm not 13 years old anymore. Will I enjoy this more than Ocarina of Time? :|
Is it as deep as Majora's Mask? The art-style doesn't allow me expect to expect so.

    *fingers crossed*

Preorder from Gamestation arrives in about 4 weeks!

Well, the Official Nintendo magazine where always going to give this a popular score.

I guess we will wait for the independent pulishier's opinions.

Deep doesn't mean dark, Wind Waker is one of the deepest games I've ever played (philosophically).

So is Zelda just Link with eyelashes and long hair?

I never got into it as much as MM, didn't give a toot about the characters. Too much back-and-forth to enjoy it maybe. NO game has got me like MM did with Anju & Kafei's Quest.

I'm pretty sure this will be my GOTY, but I don't really trust official magazines.

Agreed (probably), but its THAT quote..."best Zelda game ever". Ive been playing Nintendo since the launch of the NES and have played every console Zelda game and most handheld variations with my particular highlights being A Link to the Past, Ocarina, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Oracle, Minish, Hourglass, Tracks and Awakening. The idea that this (Skyward Sword) could trump all of those has me tingling with anticipation. I genuinely wasn't sure what to expect this time around and certain trailers even leaving me feeling disappointed...looks hear my concerns have been put to rest.

Get it, get in, get it, get it, get in! You can forget Uncharted 3, Arkham City and either Battlefield 3 or MW3, I would now take Skyward Sword of ANY other game in the run up to Christmas. I can barely wait...

I'm very tempted to get another Wii just so I can play this. I sold my original ages ago during the great game drought.

Mind you it's nearly christmas, so you lot can all chip in and get me them. Tight feckers.

Well, ive only been playing Zelda since A link to the past and am a massive fan, for me it needs charm, you know the puzzles temples/quests are gonna be solid. I'm gonna get this over most games too, the only reason why i kept my wii, no w ive got 4 weeks to find it lol

HELL YES!! It was always going to be good,it's Zelda, but i had a sneaky feeling from the great box art that Nintendo thought this was something special. I always take official platform mag reviews with a pinch of salt but for them to print "best Zelda ever",wow.

Did anyone really expect anything sub-standard from the Zelda team? I was sceptical about the Wind Waker art direction, but within seconds of booting up the game I was more than happy. I have similar feelings about Skyward Sword's look, but have no doubt that it will be yet another tour de force.

    Agreed.
I'm sure this will be one of the best games of the year but the cynic in me just doesn't trust an official mag.
Especially with the Wii being on the wane.
    An' all.

Personally, I stopped watching all of the trailers a month or so back, I've seen enough. They're there if people want to see em though.
