The Fall 2011 Anime Preview Guide

Welcome to Anime News Network's Fall 2011 Preview Guide! By now you know the drill: our team of critics write up their impressions instantly and they get posted as they go along. Each critic will cover as many shows as they can handle, resulting in alternate takes on most every show (sometimes on more than one episode!). Check back a couple of times every day during the guide and you're likely to see something new!
This is an ongoing guide. Throughout the next week or two we'll be updating as often as possible with new perspectives on new episodes from each of our team of critics. New reviews will be posted as soon as they're written.
Please remember that this is a preview guide. It is designed to give you a taste of the first episode (or the first few episodes) of a show with a preliminary opinion and a few thoughts on whether or not the show has potential. These are not intended to be blanket judgments of these series as a whole. All reviews use the same ratings scale: 1-5, with 1 being the lowest. Shows that are available streaming online will be indicated as such with links.

The newest reviews will always appear at the TOP of each critic's page, so if you're wondering what's new, just click the critic's name and their latest work will pop right up. Scroll down to see earlier reviews. The newest title in each critic's page will also be bolded for your convenience. We have a total of seven writers contributing this time; each writer will be added as their first submissions arrive.

The Art of Vampire Knight ArtbookOverall, this book is stunning. Interesting compositions, breathtaking color, and good use of line, shape, and space make this volume a very satisfactory experience. While the similarities of character design can be off putting, the fact that this book is in full color makes it easier to appreciate Hino's artwork than in the manga itself.

It isn't terrific, but Book Girl and the Captive Fool is an enjoyable, slightly atmospheric read.
Cage of Eden GN 1
Despite its slow start, Cage of Eden becomes deeply engrossing, so that once a certain point is reached, it is nearly impossible to put down. The central mystery may be something we've seen before, but in this case that doesn't matter. As Akira and his fellow survivors set out to solve it, we are filled with a foreboding that the most dangerous animals that they will face on the mysterious island are the humans.

The break in continuity may be just what flagging readers need to regain interest in a series that drags at times, and the slight melancholy of the past may recharge waning emotions. Bleach is by no means perfect, but for the time being, it is still a series worth reading.

Ai Ore! GN 2
Although not as enjoyable as its predecessor because of an increased non-consensual factor, Ai Ore is still solid romance writing for romance fans. With the humor of Ran and Rui thrown in, plus some interesting tidbits about the recording of the drama CD this is still a good beach book.

Sakura Hime: The Legend of Princess Sakura GN 3
While Sakura Hime: The Legend of Princess Sakura is not Tanemura's finest work, it is still a welcome return to the classic magical girl story. The start has been a bit slow, but with the plot the author wanted rearing its head, it seems safe to say that the series will get better from here.

Katanagatari Sub.DVD/Blu-ray Box Set 2
The end of Katanagatari is good, but had it allowed us to get closer to its characters, it could have been great.
Last Exile DVD 2Last Exile is simply a stunning series. Positional Play builds on the foundation established in the first volume and creates even more buzz.
