Apple has announced iPhone 4S, an upgraded version of June’s 2010’s iPhone 4, which will be available from Friday, October 14 in Europe and North America in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models.
Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said the device will feature the same dual-core processor found in the iPad 2. The A5 chip will make the phone itself "up to twice as fast as before" and enable graphics to run up to seven times quicker than on the previous iPhone.
The battery has been updated to offer eight hours of talk time, 14 hours of 2G talk time, six hours of 3G browsing and nine hours of Wi-Fi browsing, with added antenna-switching to ensure optimum call quality.
The basic design is unchanged, meaning the phone still features a 3.5-inch screen with the high-res Retina Display. It also boasts an upgraded 8-megapixel camera, which is said to offer 60 per cent more pixels than the iPhone 4, and supports facial recognition technology and 1080p video recording.
iPhone 4S will come in either black or white and will be available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model and $399 for the 64GB model. Pre-orders start this Friday.
Apple also used the event to announce iOS 5. Set for release on October 12, the new operating system will cut supported devices’ ties with PCs, introducing wireless software updates, cloud saving and more.

6Cool. An iPad 2 with a smaller screen and a phone. Also, still no flash support and Apple still thinks 16 GB of flash memory costs $100. I could fill a ziploc bag full of 16GB flash drives for $100.
But why buy this when iPhone 7 should be out by Spring 2012!?

No way will this be enough to get people to upgrade from a 4 but maybe enough to tempt 3gs owners. The problem all smartphone manufacturers have as I see it is that the iphone 4 is pretty much the perfect phone, theres nothing more I want.
I only really use it for calls, web & some gps. I couldn't give a monkeys about games on my mobile, they're all gimped by bad controls and always will be.
I don't think it's meant for them and we'll likely see iphone 5 in the summer.
