iPhone 5 (or the iPhone 4S, as some are calling it) rumours have been flying thick and fast for months.
And now Apple has finally confirmed a press conference for Tuesday 4 October, where the company will almost certainly unveil the iPhone 5.
The invitation hints that it will be one phone that is announced, which is likely to be the iPhone 5 rather than the much-discussed iPhone 4S.
Check out what TechRadar is hoping makes it into the next iPhone, in our video wish list:
And if you're in a bit of a hurry, we've also got a handy iPhone 5 video detailing the latest rumours on release date, spec and more - so check if out for a quick fix of next-gen Apple fun:
iPhone 5 release date
UPDATE: For the latest on new iPhone's release date, check out our regularly updated article iPhone 5 release date.
Although we are still waiting for news on an iPhone 5 UK release date, we reckon an iPhone 5 release of late October is likely. It's possible that the iPhone 5 release date is November, but it's more likely set for October.
In mid September the CEO of France Telecom (the parent company of Orange) got specific when commenting on the iPhone 5 release date, saying "If we believe what we have been told, the iPhone 5 will be released on 15 October."
Price cuts of the iPhone 4 in August hinted at an autumn release for the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S and Apple reportedly began pushing up the amount of orders for the handset.
In early September, Japanese site Macotakara reported that the iPhone 5 had entered production, saying that Foxconn and Pegatron had begun assembly on the new handset. A few days later, Digitimes wrote that Foxconn was producing 150,000 units of the new iPhone per day.
Rumours of a UK Apple Store holiday ban also emerged on 26 September. It was also reported that Telefonica, which owns the O2 network, is set to begin scaling back iPhone stock in advance of "the launch of a new smartphone".
However, it may not all be plain sailing for Apple, with rumours that Samsung will seek a sales ban courtesy of an injunction- another piece of the increasingly mixed up lawsuit puzzle between the pair.
The iPhone 5 will debut alongside iOS 5 and iCloud
Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer was asked during an earnings call why he was suggesting a 12 per cent drop in revenues for the Q3 financial period - a traditionally robust time thanks to the scores of people buying the latest iPhone.
He said that there is "a lot going on in the fall with iOS 5 and iCloud" but added there will be a "future product transition that we will not talk about today".
That's almost certainly the new iPhone 5. And iOS 5 will arrive alongside it as well iCloud.
Apple says it is "cutting the cable" with iOS 5- just as well, as it claimed the iPad 2 was the first post-PC device earlier in the year. OS updates can be delivered over the air - you'll just received what's changed rather than the usual 600MB download - and devices can be activated without plugging them into iTunes.
You can also now create and delete iOS calendars and mailboxes too, so you really can devolve your device from your PC or Mac.
"You can activate on the device and you're ready to go," explained Apple's Scott Forstall.
"Software updates are now over the air. So you no longer need to plug in to update your software. And they're now Delta updates. Instead of downloading the whole OS, you only download what's changed," he continued.

54. The rumor-mill is running over time in predicitng Verizon iPhone possibility. Since its release in 2007, the iPhone has only been available in models compatible with UMTS-GSM networks. I will say now what I have always said: I will believe it when I see the phones on the shelf in a Verizon store
Though according to TechCrunch, Apple is buying millions of CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone launch. Daring Fireball’s John Gruber penned an interesting piece and says that the CDMA iPhone is just one step below “design verification test,” He also notes that now is about the time that Apple will have to begin committing to full-scale production for such a project if it is planning a January launch as rumored, and consequently leaks are shows that a CDMA iPhone may finally be becoming a reality.

50. @nelas - 9/11 - I think a few more people died each day during World War 2 than died on 9/11. And WW2 lasted 4.5 years, so I guess that means we can't launch anything ever because people died every day?
A few Polish, French, Russian and Yugoslavian people might disagree with your xenophobic, blinkered views.
And then we can discuss WW1.

48. I hope nobody REALLY THINKS that the iPhone will launch at 12 September - a day after the 10 year anniversary of WTC. Or doesn't that matter to you Mac-freaks? Come on, have some common sense.

47. @tylerama - Depends on which part of the country you're from, obviously. Here, you hardly see anyone with an iPhone but everyone seems to have a Blackberry. Not a big fan of either. Your view of Blackberries is also outdated. It's no longer a business brand and they've done a very good job of taking their latest devices to the masses. The Bold is quite a sexy looking thing, especially in white. Still wouldn't buy one, though, although we've had to get my daughter one as a replacement (she wanted one because all her friends had one) for the Samsung Wave my wife lost.

46. Is it true that the new iPhone will be waterproof (or resistant). I guess it makes sense in that being a lifestyle device we now take them everywhere yet can't risk having it by the pool when on holiday.

45. I'm amazed anyone thinks as a BB and an iPhone as the same ? BB's are business devices, for those who never sleep and like to send work emails at 7 am on a sunday morning. It is truly shocking sitting on a tube train in London just how many folk have iPhones, probably 10 iphones for every 2 blackberrys.
And then you get folk sharing their blackberry messenger pin no's on facespace! WhatsApp knows who in your contact list has the app and you can just send them a message. Simple, really.

44. So are iPhone 4 users disappointed with their phones, considering all the features they would like in the iPhone 5? Then again Apple could bring out a brown box it would still sell

43. Earthen80 some may say that is clever marketing, no one likes looking an idiot and will then buy the latest phone. But it is also exactly what prevents me joining the Apple Brigade

42. Trouble is earthen80, if Apple did not bring out new models we would be complaining that they never innovated and improved. There will always be a better model round the corner - hopefully.
There is only one reason I would upgrade to an iPhone 5 - if it has halfway decent phone reception. My 3GS is a huge dissapointment, far worse reception than old cheap phones of years ago. A real backward step for me. I drop reception in places it was previously excellent. It might not be noticable in cities but in the rural area I live in my reception has gone from occasionally difficult to very poor a lot of the time. A cheap PAYG phone I have to carry around (same company, VF) confirms this.
I find it weird that Apple don't realise that however brilliant their product is in other ways it is first and foremost A PHONE!

41. Yes Apple, release another product so soon after your last one and make iPhone 4 users look like total idiots. I'm sure soon after the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5 will be released, then the people that bought the iPhone 4S will look like total idiots...

40. Deff an NFC although less than 2% of UK retails have the hardware!Cloud is a must even a 32Gb memory is too small for all that 1080p video and 8Mp images(must have 8Mp camera with remote print option). Built in MiFi would be great as well to help with all that data download cost and free WiFi is increasing everywhere.

39. I think the new IPhone will have the A5 chip and 8 MP camera and will be called 4S. These will be the only changes. 4G is not ready yet to be widely used and Apple don’t want to give a false sense to their users. If they just change the processor to a dual core processor and the camera to an 8 MP camera they are instantaneously becoming relevant again and at the top echelon of smart phones. Edan Aharony
