New Mortal Kombat movie, game planned

Warner Bros has announced plans to launch a new Mortal Kombat film in 2013, potentially alongside a tenth game in the long-running fighting series.

According to the LA Times, Warner Bros' New Line Cinema label is partnering with its videogame unit Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment for the project, which is expected to enter production next year and cost well under $100 million.

Set to be directed by Kevin Tancharoen, who produced the recent Mortal Kombat live-action web series, it will offer a more realistic take on the franchise's characters, which are famous for their brutal finishing moves.

Tancharoen and Warner home entertainment president Kevin Tsujihara said they hope to release a new Mortal Kombat game alongside the movie, or potentially to coincide with the motion picture’s DVD and Blu-ray release.

Warner said last month that Netherrealm Studios' Mortal Kombat reboot had sold three million copies since its release in April, making it the biggest-selling fighting game of the year.
