Infinity Blade - Review

iPhone iPad By Mark Brown

14/12/2010 @ 08:00

007 373 5963. That's the code, passed around schoolyards like Chinese whispers, to catapult you to Punch-Out!!'s final bout. You'll whizz past Piston Honda, skip Don Flamenco and bypass the rest of the NES game's vaguely racist stereotypes to find yourself staring up at the pre-tattooed mug of Mike Tyson.

Ding ding. He unleashes a whirlwind of blows and a barrage of fists, laying into your tiny brain-box with a toothless half-grin. You can't dodge any of his punches, you can't land a single blow and in a matter of seconds the bell has rung. Mac's out for the count, Tyson is flexing his pixellated muscles and you're reaching for the reset button.

You know you can beat this guy. One day. Just not today. You need to play from the beginning, learn the ropes, forget passwords and become a real boxer.

'Infinity Blade' Screenshot 1

I'd tap that.

That's pretty much how Infinity Blade will make you feel. You'll get to the end boss in about half an hour of play. You've dashed through the lush countryside, scaled the castle walls and dispatched a few henchmen, and you're already gearing up for the game's final battle. You've hardly begun to master the combat, you've barely scratched the surface of the hefty armoury and you're already at the big evil bad guy, the so called "God King", the dude who killed your dad 20-odd years ago. Well, alright then. Have at you, scum.

Fighting in Infinity Blade is all about dodging, blocking and parrying your opponent's blows to open up a slim opportunity to inflict damage. You'll get the best results with a parry, which has you meeting blade with blade to counter an enemy's attack. Pull off a couple of those, and you'll have a few choice seconds to lay into his exposed flesh.

You can dodge attacks, but juke the wrong way and you'll get chopped down. You can block attacks, but if your shield isn't up to snuff the blade will go right through. Parrying – striking your finger across the touch-screen to meet incoming attacks – is where it's at. It requires expert timing, the right direction for your slashes and you've got to read your enemy's tells. As the battle moves on and the cinematic camera sweeps to its next angle, attacks get more ferocious, tells change, timing alters and new moves are laid against you. No point trying to parry if your titanic opponent stomps on you.

'Infinity Blade' Screenshot 2

Don't lose your head.

It quickly turns into a smart series of attacks and dodges, working offence and defence together in harmony. There's absolutely no room for hacking and slashing: you need to read your opponent and anticipate incoming attacks. You need to dodge one blow and parry another, knocking your enemy back before healing yourself by drawing a magic symbol on the screen.

It's electric, the same sort of edge-of-your-seat thrill you get from the best Punch-Out!! brawl. When your enemy finally goes down in a barrage of touch-screen sword slashes, it feels amazingly satisfying.

Except this is one fight you won't win. Like the 8-bit Tyson, the tyrannical God King has no hesitation in slicing and dicing you, making brutally quick attacks you can barely dodge, let alone parry, and wielding a blade that can rip through armour and shields like butter. He quickly finishes you off, plunges a pointy blade through your torso and goes back to sit on his throne for another couple of decades. Game over, the end.

Great game - although I take issue with the idea that the enemies don't change on the next pay through. There's no way you'll see all the enemy variations first time through.

And damn, this game looks better than plenty of 360 titles I own.

A well deserved 8. Every morning, the commute is being eaten up by Infinity Blade. I've done the God King and seen both endings, but still I'm playing it. That compulsion just to collect and master everything... it's addictive.

For some crazy reason £3.49 seems expensive for an iPhone game, all my faves have cost .59p.

Good review, completely agree.

What I find remarkable is how ferocious the enemies are, reminds me of Demon's Souls in that respect. Most "full" games could learn a lesson or two here.

Release on XBLA would be missing the points of the game so completely! Infinity Blade works and rest entirely on the touch screen mechanism, magic, dodging, parrying and hitting precisely as you could.

Randomly slicing and dicing may get you through first few combats, but you cannot get any further! Plays much so smarter when plays with the patience of a saint and the alertness of a hawk, to judge which direction the next and indeed follow through attacks gonna come from.

IPad is much easier and better version for this over iPhone's small screen in my view.

Also looks so gorgeous that it's feels like a proper PC game that's somehow got tricked into iPad's screen!

I wouldn't say it's a must have game for its gameplay. But surely from a technological point of view, this game is so much more amazing than anything my psp can do, so I bought it. It's also at a fraction of any psp game I'll ever buy.

@Vanmunt- if your phone is 9 months old, it should be a 3GS, no? In which case the game runs fine- occasionally it slows if you haven't rebooted the device to clear its RAM, but that's easily avoidable. If it's a vanilla 3G, it was already old tech when you got it!

Yep, I'd go with all of that maybe pausing to add the need to recognise what weapon the enemy is using as poison blades tend to force you more into blocking moves than more risky parry and dodges. Just another small layer of depth but it all helps make the experience that much better.

One thing that struck me last night, not about Infinity Blade but the iOS platform in general, is I can't remember the last time I played such a wide variety of really good games on a single platform. The way the App Store has encouraged smaller dev teams to release software and genuinely compete with the big players is fantastic and I'm honestly enjoying my iOS game time more than the 360 or PS3 at the moment. While I understand the hatred from some so-called 'hardcore' gamers for a platform that's just as welcoming to casual gamers as it is to 'proper' games I really think they're missing out on a lot of very good titles and experiences. Ah well.

I have genuinely fallen in love with this game, normally I find an iPhone game I really like but only play it about twice, but this has me going back again and again. I finally killed the God King during bloodline 6, but continuing to play as I want to unlock the Infinity Blade itself.

Very satisfying gameplay, but I disagree with the reviewer, dodges and shield suffice, I'm awful at parrying, yet get by just fine without it.

looks great!
controls are perfect for the touch screen
a tad repetitive I wish there would more ways to get to the evil boss, more kill animations etc...
but this will be hopefully fixed with the next update which will have more ways to get to the boss at the end, new weapons and multiplayer?

wish I would be better at parring :)

@Vanmunt- ah, are you one of the people who rushed to get an iPhone when they became available on Orange? If so, you did get kinda stiffed, because they only had the 3G at first and not the (then top-of-the-range) 3GS. They didn't do a great job of explaining this to people, for obvious reasons.

On the positive side, you should be due an upgrade not too long after the inevitable iPhone 5 arrives, which should last at least a couple of years before it starts looking long in the tooth.

Throughout the review and about 36 comments I haven't once seen the phrase "on rails". This makes me very happy. It's such an out of context description when applied to Inifinty Blade and has been irking me no end: the amount people have been throwing it about.

There has been mention at the lack of exploration gameplay, and rightly so, it's a fair point in some people's eyes. Not one that bothers me so much since the gameplay that is present is so solid.

So everyone pat themselves on the back for not saying "but it's on rails"! You've made me a happy bunny.

Edit: grammar stuff

But it's on rails!

Nah, just kidding. I'm sick of people saying that about Infinity Blade, Doom Resurrection and Rage etc. too. I don't see what the problem is with games being on rails. Not every game has to be about exploration, and some of my favourite games ever have been on-rails as a deliberate design choice (Rez and the Panzer Dragoon series). People don't complain about other design choices so vehemently.

If you don't like games that are on rails, fair enough, but don't expect games to be marked down for it. I don't like most FPS games, but I don't think they should be marked down for the design conventions of the genre (come to think of it, most of them are pretty much on rails nowadays anyway!)

I want to know how long my battery will last running this. Surely its a worry many people have? 3D games on the iphone deplete the battery FAST.

If i am going to fork out my cash on a game i want the hardware running it to last at least 30 mins. Otherwise whats the point?

It's a fighting game with an upgradeable fighter. Think of it this way ;-)

That's a pretty good reason ;-) That said, getting an iPhone 3G 9 months ago as an "upgrade" is pretty crap treatment by your carrier.

You can't really give an accurate measurement because it will depend how many charge cycles your particular iphone has gone through, for example the iPod 2G's need charged a more now I've had it for a few years.

Loving it. Though I have to say my 3GS battery does get depleted pretty darn quick.

Having said that, I always have a USB at work and in my bag at all times so its not a huge issue.
