My Favourite Wine: Cyril Leeder

What’s your favourite wine that you’ve tried?

One individual wine would be hard to pinpoint, but I like Ontario wine. I collect a lot of Ontario wines and Italian reds. I guess that’s about as narrow as I could get it. If I had to say one wine, I would say a Gabbiano Chianti, simply because that’s a place where I’ve visited and stayed there and we have a few bottles and we drink them regularly.

Do you have a favourite Ontario wine?

Yeah, I think rieslings, chardonnays and pinot noirs.

Do you have any particular wine-related memories that stand out for you?

The Gabbiano experience, I guess. I just got there with my wife and some friends — it was just the four of us — and we stayed at the castle, which is where the winery is, and had a bottle of Prosecco and their Chianti Classico overlooking the Tuscan hills outside one night. That was kind of a special night. And I got out to the Olympics last year, in Vancouver, and was at a party hosted by the Aquilini family, who own the Canucks, and they were serving some very special wines. One of them was a [Wine Spectator] wine of the year — a brunello — Casanova di Neri 2001 — which was quite spectacular.
