What financial crisis? Rifle residents sitting pretty
Less than three weeks before the US elections, voters across the country are preoccupied by the economy. Except in Rifle, a Colorado town where the inhabitants are sitting on colossal gas reserves.

Neither the financial crisis nor the next choice of president can reduce Rifle’s appetite for energy.

In this Colorado town, which sits on enormous gas reserves, both companies and locals are prospering from an economic boom.

“50% of natural gas used in the USA comes from wells drilled in the last 40 months. That shows huge demand. All the candidates recognize that. They recognize the importance of energy independence for this country,” explains Doug Hock, spokesperson for the gas company Encana.

In Rifle, the day labourers are rich, their bosses are millionaires, and the housing market, unlike the rest of the United States, is not in crisis.

“My business this year is quite good. Last year my business was outstanding,” says Nella Barker, a real estate agent. Rafeal, a driller, shares her enthusiasm. For fours days’ hard work, he earns 2000 dollars.

“If McCain gets in, business won’t boom…but it’ll probably level out and be steady. Whereas if Obama gets in, he’ll try to cut back on drilling in the US,” explains Rob McPherson, a senior driller.

The other side of the coin

Gas labourers work 24 hours a day. Time is money. The noise of the excavators and trucks never stops.

John and Darlene built their ranch overlooking Rifle 15 years ago. At the time it was their idea of paradise - no noise, an unspoiled view, the epitome of peace and quiet. Now, it is surrounded by derricks.

“That well you see there, makes $1 million a month. That one, beside the tanks … $1 million a month, too,” explains John Skellion. His wife adds: "They want to drill, drill, drill! They want to pump that money out of the ground. We own the ground, we own the surface rights, but we don’t own the mineral rights. None of it. If they come and drill a well on my property, I get nothing.”

No surprise then: their vote goes to Obama, whom they see as the greener candidate.

Money for drilling

This is to refute the comment from Cheryl. We did not receive any money because we fought to keep them off our property. Our neighbors took advantage of the the drilling and received only a small pittance for their surface rights. In 2005 we were surrounded by 4 pads which drilled 24/7 - the vibrations would shake us awake in our bed at night not to mention the horrible odors and incessant noise. We agree we need the natural gas so we don't have to rely on MidEast oil but we are praying and waiting for the day when a clean alternative energy is developed so all this drilling will be a moot point!!! Until then we'll stay on their backs to make sure they drill responsibly and reclaim what they destroy.

Rifle Economy

I agree that the economy in Rifle is booming, and will continue until we run out of gas or the contracts end. However, the oil and gas industry has made it hard for non-oil and gas workers and businesses to maintain. I do not work in the oil and gas industry, but have before, to make more money, but to me it wasn't worth the hours or time away from my family. Small businesses are having a hard time hiring employees, because they can't compete with the pay that the oil and gas industry offers. Also, if you don't work in the gas fields, and are not a doctor or lawyer, you can't afford to buy a house in the current market, and since the oil and gas workers aren't permanant residence, they all rent, so the people who own housed and rent them out raise the rent so high that we ( the non oil/gas workers) can't afford it! So my opinion is, it's great that the town that I live in has a great economy, but we need to do something about the cost of living, and the illegal immigrants.....but that's another story.

Story on Rifle Energy Boom

I think it is a great article except for John Skellion did receive money. All surface owners negiotate surface damages with the gas company. If Obama has brains he will not slow down the only viable economy in the USA.

rifle colorado report

our family had a ranch holiday just outside of rifle in 2001. then Rifle was totally unspoilt and I don't think saw too many outsiders... when we stopped for breakfast in a local diner, everyone looked up as we spoke. Made us most welcome and asked a lot of questions about the U.K.
I do hope the boom and the expansion has not spoilt it. Good luck to the workers, but watch out forthe beauty.
