Kapisa, a test for France in Afghanistan
French troops are being deployed alongside US forces in the hostile Kapisa province, north of Kabul, a move announced by Nicolas Sarkozy at the last NATO summit. (Report: C. Billet)

The French troops will be taking over from the American soldiers in the Kapisa province, and will have to get used to the difficult terrain - something our reporters who were there before the deployment can testify to. Situated to the north of Kabul, this province is a strategic point for the coalition.  An entryway to the Afghan capital, it is a hostile zone where the Taliban are particularly active.

Although caught in a stranglehold by the fighting, people still try to lead normal lives. “It is very dangerous. But if we have faith, we’re not afraid. And then, there is fighting and these air raids day and night. So now we’ve become used to it”, says Mohammad Aqa Kakal, head of rural development for the Tag Ab district in the Kapisa province.

The Americans have tried hard to gain the support of the inhabitants notwithstanding the lack of communication, caused by fear of suicide attacks and security measures. The mission is delicate because the Taliban have local influence here and are often respected.

The doctor Afizullah, an emergency room doctor at the Khor Gal clinic in the Tag Ab district, is not convinced by the Americans, “who don’t do much. Sometimes they come and distribute medicines but that doesn’t really help. One time, they came to give out toothpaste and some gloves”.

It is a race against time. Gaining the support of the local population will be an uphill battle for the French soldiers in Kapisa. The Taliban already have much local support in this hostile environment, making it a war the French battalion cannot hope to win with weapons alone.

Progress

I echo the comments of the previous Soldier from Ohio. I am currently serving as a mentor to the Afghan National Army. The French should be proud of the efforts of their brave men and women who have already sacrificed much. We recently aided the ANA in a major operation bringing the positive influence of the government to the people of the Tag Ab Valley. Hundreds of children now have a winter coat and a little extra food to help them through the coming winter. Hundreds of men, women and children have received medical attention and medications and vaccinations that will help them live more healthy lives. The progress is real! Whether or not you agree with the political spin on this, consider my words as I am an eye witness to the thanks from the people of the Tag Ab Valley. We must continue our efforts to honor the sacrifices that have been made for the progress thus far and continue to aid the tired and down-trodden of this place.

I was in Tag Ab

I was a mentor for the Afghan National Police in Kapisa Province and worked with the ANP in Nijrab and Tag Ab. I was there when Firebase Kutschbach was built. I also had the privilege of working with some of the French ANA mentors. France should be proud of the service of her soldiers in Afghanistan. I met some very good soldier there and I linked to this report on my blog, http://billandbobsadventure.blogspot.com .

Pay no attention to the whiners below. They would like to see France run and hide. France is doing valuable work in Afghanistan, and the ANA is the better for it. The Brits below don't understand that there is a difference now; NATO is not an occupation force but an assistance force, helping Afghanistan to once again become a real country; something they have not been since their king was deposed in 1977. It takes time, and there is blood invested, but it is working. Keep your chins up. You'd be proud of your soldiers if you could see how they serve with distinction. You have my respect.

Kapisa, a test for France in Afghanistan

We lost 1,000 men per day during WW1 plus the wounded, I guess we have a margin.

AFGHANISTAN

So, you French are now entering into the "killing game" ..... folowing the U.S. example, blindly. And when your boys are killed in return you will bleat, long and loud, about your boys being "in harms way" and "if you do not support this you are not a patriot " etc., etc.,
Dear, dear, dear France ... what a let-down you are ....... one of you told me .... "Nae to worry lad, we always go where the money is".

French involvement in Afghanistan

This is a big mistake on the part of the French government. They should never have involved the French Army in this foolish enterprise. The British Army fought Afghans on the North West Frontier for many years and came to the conclusion that it was unwinnable. The Americans deserve to get a bloody nose for their arrogance but the European nations should get out fast.
