Great Prokofievans
Calendar Message Board My Account Email
Over the years, a number of gifted musicians have championed the works of Sergei Prokofiev. The artists share one thing in common -- they are among the greatest of the century in their respective disciplines. Another common trait shared among many of those noted below was their friendship with the composer. In fact, some like David Oistrakh and Mstislav Rostropovich collaborated with Prokofiev in writing works for their instrument. Most also gave premiere public performances of Prokofiev's works. And many of the Great Prokofievans, understandably, are Russian.

Another common bond among the musicians listed in these pages is a new generation of artist who, although they were too young to personally know Prokofiev, show an uncanny understanding of his music. Several of the more recent Prokofievans have recorded the entire repetoire of the composer's works in their genre. Among today's Prokofiev specialists, Neeme Järvi and Gennadi Rozhdestvensky have been the most prolific conductors, covering almost all of Prokofiev's symphonic works between the two of them.
