Prokofiev's Music
  • Prokofiev 2003 - Boosey & Hawkes has a page dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Prokofiev's death. This special tribute includes sound samples of his major works, links to all of Prokofiev's works in Boosey & Hawkes' catalog, links to selected recordings, an introduction to the composer by Prokofiev expert David Nice, and a very useful timeline chronicling the major events in the composer's life. The Timeline feature is worth the visit alone, packed with previously unpublished photographs provided by the Prokofiev family.
  • Prokofiev - The Collected Works - Maintained by Lionel Choi in Singapore. Contains reviews and recommendations of recordings of most of Prokofiev's major works. Excellent starting point if you're looking for recommendations of good recordings of particular works.
  • Compositions by Prokofiev - Maintained by Onno van Rijen in the Netherlands. Contains the most complete English-language listing (other than this site) of Prokofiev's works, including uncataloged works.
  • Classic CD Online - Prokofiev [Note: site no longer available.] - Maintained by Classic CD Online. Contains one paragraph biography of Prokofiev riddled with historical errors. More useful are the dozens of reviews of Prokofiev's music on CD written by biographer Daniel Jaffé, Ian McDonald (see below), and other Classic CD Online writers.
  • Pièrre et le Loup - - Maintained by Lorcom Productions in Nîmes, France. French page about Peter and the Wolf that is a companion to the interactive DVD. Website includes information about the work as well as interactive animations to discover the instruments of the orchestra.
  • 9.Prokofiev - Maintained by K. Stewart in Tacoma, Washington. Contains concise, sometimes scathing reviews of selected recordings.
  • Prokofiev: A Little Recording Guide - Written by Carlos De Martin (Torino, Italy) and maintained by Neil Tingley, London. Excellent personal recommendations of recordings of major works by Prokofiev, including most of the solo piano repetoire.
  • BalletNotes: Prokofiev - Part of the BalletNotes website, the page devoted to Prokofiev provides a brief biography of the composer, as well as a list of his most popular works and a discussion of his major ballets.
  • The Symphony - Prokofiev - Maintained by Brian Blackwell and Andre Dauwalder. Contains brief biography of Prokofiev as well an analysis of his compositional style as it relates to other composers of classical music.
  • Classical Net - Basic Repretoire List - Prokofiev - Maintained by David Lampson and Classical Net. Contains recommendations of recordings of a handful of Prokofiev's major works.
  • fredericchiu.com - Sergei Prokofiev Forum Maintained by Frederic Chiu. Message board on the pianist's website devoted to the discussion of Prokofiev, his music, and Frederic's recordings of the complete solo piano music of Prokofiev.

  • The Serge Prokofiev Association - Newly formed organization dedicated to bringing together those interested in Prokofiev and his music by providing the latest information about international events, recordings and publications. Home to the quarterly print journal Three Oranges.
  • Prokofiev as Pianist - Maintained by Mark Arnest in Colorado. Contains an excellent essay and analysis of Prokofiev's piano roll and 78RPM recordings from the 1920s and 1930s. Brilliantly insightful and intelligently written.
  • A Prokofiev Page [Note: site no longer available.] - Maintained by rossik. Contains a great compendium of essays written by or about Prokofiev and his music, as well an annotated list of Prokofiev's recordings, and a great selection of photographs, most unauthorized reproductions.
  • The Sergei Prokofiev Website - Maintained by Bruce Turlish. Contains abridged catalog of works, lots of photographs, a limited collection of links, and, best of all, a compilation of all of Robert Cummings' reviews of recordings of Prokofiev's major works.
  • Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev [Note: site no longer available.] - Maintained by Joshua Brandt Schiffman at Oberlin College. Contains abridged catalog of works, some photographs, links, and a great discussion of Prokofiev's piano sonatas.
  • BBC Artist Profile: Sergei Prokofiev - Part of the BBC's excellent classical music site. Their profile of Prokofiev includes a biography, list of key dates, some RealAudio sound clips of his music, and an unusual collage.
  • Sergei Prokofiev's Home Page - Maintained by ah-san@geocities.com. Generic Prokofiev page that contains material lifted from other sites, including the full-text of Nestyev's biographical entry from Encyclopaedia Britannica, as well as program notes about major works lifted from CD jackets.
  • Sergei Prokofiev [Note: site no longer available.] - Maintained by Innovative Media. Part of The Classical Corner, this is yet another biography page about Prokofiev. Contains brief discussions of his major works as well.
  • Prokofiev - Maintained by eniale@mit.edu while at MIT. Contains links to other sites, as well as an essay on Sergei Prokofiev and Romeo & Juliet by Karen Monson.

  • Boosey & Hawkes 4 stars - Boosey & Hawkes retains the publishing rights to most of Prokofiev's music. Their excellent website contains a plethora of information about the composer. Here you'll find a biography, an introduction to his music by David Nice, a list of works sorted by category with lists to the sheet music (if Boosey & Hawkes has it for sale or rental), a brief list of upcoming performances, a handful of recordings, and four sound samples of Prokofiev's music.
  • iclassics.com Profile of Sergei Prokofiev 4 stars - Maintained by iClassics.com, a production of Universal-Vivendi, which maintains the Philips, Deutsche Grammophon, and Decca labels among others. This page contains lots of useful information about Prokofiev, including a brief biography, a list of his works, selected discography from Universal's stable of classical record labels, and links to features about artists who play Prokofiev's music on one of the Universal labels.
