Restaurant Review: The Farm Yard Restaurant, Paphos

By Nan Mackenzie 01/10/11
The three rules for survival are: never play cards with a man called Doc; never sleep with a man/woman whose troubles are worse than your own; and never eat at a place called Mom’s. It was the latter that came to mind after an invitation to eat at the Farm Yard restaurant in Kathikas.Trepidation was based purely on past grim experiences after dining at places sporting names which try to seduce with memories of proper home cooking, sadly these Mom/Granny/Farmhouse styled eateries all ended up with an inability on my part to handle Mom’s hot-pot suspect special or Granny’s ghastly shepherds pie... Bar review: Sushi La, Nicosia

By Ariadne Lindahl 01/10/11
Dazzling, dramatic and modern to the point of surreal, Sushi La in Nicosia is certainly not a disappointment to the senses. Known for mixing modern, Tokyo-inspired aesthetics, gourmet sushi and an international cuisine of cocktails, one can simply not be dissatisfied with what this restaurant bar has to offer. Lights in shades ranging from pink to blue create a feeling of entering another city, far away from the streets of Nicosia; Sushi La, with its futuristic interior bar design, open sushi kitchen, and shielded outdoor restaurant area makes it hard to believe that you’re not in a place full of glamour, technology, and tall buildings. ... Film review: Henry’s Crime **

By Tracy Phillips 24/09/11
This is a quirky, low-budget independent movie about a toll booth operator turned bank robber in Buffalo, New York. Keanu Reeves is Henry Torne, a man struggling to take control of his life, until he ends up in prison for a crime he hasn’t committed. While inside, his cellmate Max (James Caan) inspires him to fulfill his potential and find his dream. When he finally works out what he wants, it seems to include robbing a bank, playing Lopakhin in a production of Chekov’s The Cherry Orchard and falling in love. If it sounds a bit cheesy and rather odd, it is... Read on

Restaurant Review: Nordsee, Nicosia

By Alexander McCowan 24/09/11
Are our new political alliances transforming our eating habits? At one time, not so long ago, no respectable Nicosian diner would consider the evening a success without consuming at least a kilo of pork, but now it’s all fish. This year three new fish outlets have opened in the capital, and they are all thriving. The latest venture is the German based Nordsee restaurant in Makarios Avenue in the same complex as Mondo café.Nordsee have been involved with fish since the 19th century and have over 400 outlets in continental Europe. Somehow they heard about our love affair with fish and thought it was time we shared in their harvest of the deep... Read on

Bar review: Blue Pine, Larnaca

By George Vou 24/09/11
A lot of the time we focus on what’s new as a reference point to where we should go for a meal or a drink, this thought process having its roots in our frequent need for a change of environment. The Blue Pine Bar and Restaurant is the exact opposite: it is 21 years old at the end of the month and is the ‘poster boy’ of an established hot spot... Read on

Restaurant review: Oriental Cuisine, Ayia Napa

By Nathan Morley 17/09/11
Put together the flavours of some of the great recipes of the Asia region and you have all the ingredients for a taste explosion – and that's what I experienced at Oriental Cuisine in Ayia Napa. This relatively new restaurant offers a memorable dining experience, with a focus on fine authentic food and wine, service and style. In recent months it has cut out a name for itself by preparing exquisite dishes from Thailand and China and unlike many fine Asian restaurants, the food is sensibly priced – so a family or group can eat here without breaking the bank.Oriental Cuisine is operated by the owners of Hokkaido, who have just celebrated being awarded the coveted badge of being voted the number one restaurant in Cyprus on Trip Advisor...
