CYPRUS vowed yesterday to keep Turkey's entry talks on hold as long as Ankara challenges the island's rights to launch offshore gas drilling, in an escalating row among east Mediterranean neighbours over hydrocarbon reserves.Rhetoric over ownership of speculated oil and gas deposits has sharpened after a deterioration of relations between Turkey and Israel, the discovery of massive gas fields by Israel and plans by Cyprus to drill as early as next month.Cyprus has blocked the opening of several negotiating chapters in Turkey-EU entry talks. EAC: Noble’s first customers

By Stefanos Evripidou 13/09/11
THE ELECTRICITY Authority of Cyprus (EAC) could be the first customer to receive natural gas from partners Noble and Delek, currently drilling for hydrocarbon deposits in Israel’s offshore fields. The EAC met with representatives of Noble and Delek in Nicosia yesterday in a “very good climate”, releasing a statement after saying that all three were ready to cooperate in the field of natural gas. “The role of the EAC is considered by the two companies as very important, since the EAC will be the most important and perhaps, at first, the only consumer of natural gas,” the EAC announcement said... 1 comment

Dividing spoils of natural resources

By Simon Bahceli 11/09/11
WITH CYPRUS and Turkey sliding headlong towards a clash over hydrocarbon resources in the eastern Mediterranean, Turkish Cypriots - whose rights Turkey says it is protecting by obstructing Greek Cypriot exploration - appear oblivious to the possible benefits to their community if the exploration and subsequent extraction went ahead. ... 19 comments

Power supply increased by American generators

By Natalie Hami 31/08/11
ANOTHER 40MW of power was made available yesterday through the recently acquired generators from the American company Energy International, said EAC acting spokesman Ioannis Tsouloftas. “Last night [Monday] there was a trial connection of 40MW and we expect that soon 60MW will be made available from Dhekelia,” said Tsouloftas. The first set of generators from the American company which are 60MW in capacity, arrived just over a week ago and were hooked up to Dhekelia power station. According to Tsouloftas, the remaining 35MW which have been installed at Moni power station will be made available by the coming week... 1 comment

Now say goodbye to the 60-watt bulb

31/08/11
FIRST IT was the 100 watt, then the 75-watt and now it’s the turn of the 60-watt incandescent bulb to disappear from shop shelves forever. As of tomorrow the lowly bulb, like its brighter cousins will be banned under EU rules. EU Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger said:”They have been part of our daily life for such a long time  – that it seems odd that they will disappear but from September 1 onwards, 60 watt bulbs will gradually disappear from the store shelves, as this type of bulb will be banned by EU law. Why? Edison's light bulb, which has produced light for more than 100 years, is simply no longer the state of the art, when it comes to lighting – they just consume too much energy for the light they produce... 6 comments

Marcoullis; we got the support we needed and are very satisfied

By Stefanos Evripidou 26/08/11
THE INCREASING number of high-level visits between Israel and Cyprus are proof that the two countries are building relations “brick by brick”, said an Israeli diplomat yesterday. Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis’ visit to Israel on Wednesday, where she met the Israeli President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, was “excellent for both sides”, said the diplomat, adding, “We’re certainly building relations brick by brick”. As drilling looms, Wikileaks reveals previous tensions

By Stefanos Evripidou 24/08/11
EXPLORATORY drilling in Cyprus’ southeast waters combined with Turkish naval and aerial exercises next month could see tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean reach new dizzying heights. The last time Turkey interfered with Cyprus’ oil and gas exploration, unlikely support came from the island’s “evil demon”, the United Kingdom, revealed US diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks. According to the cables, sent by the US Embassy in Nicosia and mostly classified as confidential, the Cypriot Foreign Ministry summoned ambassadors of the five permanent members (P5) of the UN Security Council in November 2008 to report Turkish navy harassment of Cyprus-contracted vessels conducting seismic exploration in Cypriot waters... 6 comments

The end of the energy scramble

By Poly Pantelides 23/08/11
THE ELECTRICITY Authority (EAC) will be connecting the last set of generators it is expecting by the end of August seeing off the immediate scramble for energy following the devastating July 11 naval base blast. The first set of generators from the American company Energy International with a 60MW capacity arrived in Cyprus on Sunday and will be hooked up to Dhekelia Power Station. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is expecting this week 35MW capacity generators from the company which will be fitted at Moni Power Station.
