THE government will immediately resolve any shortcomings in the prevention and diagnosis of cancer, the health minister said yesterday, after an MP spoke of delays in issuing biopsy results to women.

Stavros Malas conceded that the fact that there was a histopathology department only in Nicosia “potentially generates some delays”.

He said the ministry is currently looking into the possibility of creating such a department in Limassol, but this should not be expected immediately.

He assured, however, that an effort will be made to reinforce the Nicosia department with staff so that results come out sooner.

As regards prevention, especially that of breast cancer, the minister said digital mammogram machines will soon be procured and installed in all state hospitals.

“I want to assure you that in combination with the mammogram machines, which we will buy now, and the high quality of histopathology tests performed at the Nicosia general hospital, we are at a high level concerning prevention and diagnosis of cancer,” Malas said. “The state will resolve any possible shortcomings, and it will resolve them immediately.”

According to DISY MP Stella Kyriakidou, there were inexcusable delays in delivering biopsy results “which endangers patients’ lives and creates serious shortcomings in the required treatment”.

Kyriakidou also censured the absence of a proper breast cancer centre.

Around 500 new cases of cancer are diagnosed every year.
