HSN Scholarship 2011 Winner Announced

2011 Herb Society of Nashville’s $2500

Undergraduate Academic Scholarship

Awarded to Eric Limbird

The Herb Society of Nashville’s 2011 Scholarship recipient, Eric Limbird, is a second year student at Middle Tennessee State University. He is majoring in Plant and Soil Sciences in the College of Applied Sciences. He and his wife, also a student, live in Nashville. The members of the Herb Society of Nashville hope that the two thousand five hundred dollar award, which will be applied to his tuition for next year, will further his remarkable education. Good luck to you Eric.

Eric is currently involved at MTSU Plant and Soil Science Club and is a Past President of the group. He is serving as the national secretary for the college branch (ACB) of the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS), as well as, Southern Region Representative for ACB-ASHS. Eric was awarded the “Best Undergraduate Research Poster” at the Southern Region ASHS conference where he presented a research paper on Rhododendron calendulaceum propagation. He will be presenting the findings of the next phase of his research in Hawaii in September.

Eric has also participated in ASHS horticultural competitions in Palm Desert.

Eric has written two funded undergraduate research grant proposals investigating ecophysiological effects on propagation of Rhododendron calendulaceum. He has initiated relationships with multiple nursery propagators and members of the American Rhododendron Society. He is currently preparing a manuscript of this study for publication in HortTechnology. Eric has also co-authored a research project evaluating the effects of daminozide on hydroponic cucumber production. This work has also been presented at the ASHS in Palm Springs.

Eric has participated in many community projects both in Nashville and Murfreesboro. He has worked with Habitat for Humanity, restoration of trails at Radnor Lake State Park, homeless prevention work Campus for Human Development (Room in the Inn). He is currently considering launching a community garden at Room in the Inn and possibly partnering with groups to provide successful community gardens in less privileged areas of Nashville.
