Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation SKG will be the first recipient of the 3D Visionary Award. The presentation will be made at the 4th Annual 3D Entertainment Summit in association with Variety, scheduled for September 20-22 at the Hollywood & Highland Center, Hollywood, CA. Mr. Katzenberg, a keynote speaker at several previous summits, will address the conference via taped remarks on Wednesday, September 21st at 11:30am PT. 3D and visual effects veteran Phil “Captain 3D” McNally, who has collaborated with Katzenberg on such films as Puss in Boots, Shrek Forever After, Kung Fu Panda 2, and How to Train Your Dragon, among others, will accept the award in person on Katzenberg’s behalf.

(Reuters) - Since director James Cameron's "Avatar" raked in $2.8 billion at global box offices, Hollywood has flooded theaters with wave after wave of 3D movies, but some industry watchers wonder if theatergoers are now drowning in it.

At the 2011 3D Entertainment Summit, part of CE Week in New York, Vice President of Marketing for LG Mobile Phones, Tim O’Brien, delivered remarks on technology’s important role in the evolution of entertainment. Illustrating how 3D enabled mobile devices will be the next step in the natural evolution of entertainment, O’Brien declared that user-generated content will fuel the overall 3D experience. O’Brien added that with the launch of LG THRILL 4G; all consumers will have access to this next-generation technology, breaking former accessibility, technology and content barriers.

Unicomm is bringing its popular 3D Entertainment Summit to New York City for the first time. The event, which sold out last year in Los Angeles, will focus on all aspects of 3D entertainment, including 3D video games. In addition, Unicomm will host a simultaneous NY Mobile Entertainment Summit on the same dates, June 21-22, at the same New York Hilton venue. Both events are Official Partners with CE Week in New York, which runs June 20-25, 2011 as part of a reciprocal partnership agreement. M. Leading technology providers from the home entertainment industry will also showcase the latest home 3D applications at the third annual technology, business and creative event for the worldwide Blu-ray Disc community.

The 3D TV market will spend the next couple of years establishing itself and accumulating a base of content and devices -- both TVs and Blu-ray players. According to ABI Research, market growth will start to accelerate in 2012 with shipments of 3D TV sets approaching 50 million in 2015.

The International 3D Society announced today that Panasonic Corporation will be the 2010 recipient of its prestigious Charles Wheatstone Award. The Wheatstone Award named for inventor Charles Wheatstone, who invented the Stereoscope in 1838 in England, was also a noted advocate and educator about stereoscopic vision and imaging. In recognition of their great contribution to increasing public knowledge about stereoscopy as a technical art and craft, the International 3D Society acknowledges Panasonic as an educational force for 3D in the 21st century. The Wheatstone Award will be formally presented to Panasonic at the 3D Technology Awards on October 19 at Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

LOS ANGELES – At the third annual 3D entertainment summit in Los Angeles, speakers like M. Night Shyamalan and Jefrey Katzenberg headlined the two-day event. The key takeaway from the sold out summit, which had over 800 attendees, was that 3D, though still an embryonic industry, is poised for explosive growth and will become the major force in entertainment moving forward. Writer/director/producer Paul W.S. Anderson has parlayed his love of videogames into a successful film career. His low-budget Resident Evil video game adaptation launched a film franchise that has no end in sight. Resident Evil: Afterlife has generated over $86 million worldwide at the box office so far. The director, who also brought the AVP: Alien vs. Predator and Mortal Kombat game franchises to the big screen, has had success infusing films like Event Horizon and Death Race with action and horror elements from games.

Night Shyamalan, the writer/producer of Universal Pictures Devil and a self-described non-techie, said he was wary that audiences' expectations of 3D films will force filmmakers to compromise "story-telling integrity" for eye-catching special effects.
