Posted August 26, 2011 by Ben Strauss

Sony’s PS3 is continuing to make headway, spurred on by the recent global price drop.  News from Sony now shows the console has hit 22 million units sold in Europe alone.

"PS2 across our territory went well over 50 million units. We’re at 22 million on PS3," SCEE boss Jim Ryan said to MCV. "So there’s lots of life in that still to come."

Sony credits a major ‘heavyweight campaign’ coupled with the price drop for the increased pace of sales.  U.K. marketing director for Sony Alan Duncan made it clear that “It was essential that we supported it with a heavyweight campaign.”

“The announcement also kicks off a busy period with major campaigns for Resistance 3, DanceStar Party, PS Move, the new PSP and Uncharted 3,” he continued  Ads appeared in all sorts of media, even in newspapers and posters around the country.
